The Messiest Band Breakups in History

Every beginning comes from another experience's ending, but that doesn't make breakups any easier or less messy. And although all splits are tough, there's something about a band breakup that leaves its fans as heartbroken, angry, and nostalgic as the members who experienced the abrupt departure firsthand.

This list features the messiest band breakups in history, proving that highly public, complicated splits cross all decades and genres. Some rock 'n' roll bands took their intentional hateful personalities a little too far. In other cases, the hard-partying lifestyle and inter-band romances were to blame. And despite some band members' outwardly harmonious “best buds” reputation, the truth later came out.

It’s amazing how Fleetwood Mac had band members writing bitter breakup songs about each other and then making them sing the songs about themselves.

The Beatles' breakup was pretty messy, too. Paul going solo, Yoko showing up...

Would be really interesting to see an episode of bands that stuck it out.

Breakups are tough, but without a break up, we can't get the 'We're gettin' the band back together!' montage in the biopic, so...

7:00 Axl Rose's habit of turning up very late caused all kinds of problems. My BF worked on the tours, and Axl regularly only turned up over an hour late, which meant the band had to pay horrendous fines due to noise ordinance regulations, which were so expensive that the tour was often making a financial loss! Not to mention, concert goers leaving so late missed the last bus or train home (we are talking about Europe here) and either had to try to find a very expensive taxi to take them home, or walk, or even had to get a hotel room for the night. My BF drove a truck, so of course the concert ending so late delayed the packing up and loading all the rigging, lighting gear, speakers, amps, sound desk and all the other musical equipment into the trucks, so everyone was bone-tired and annoyed. It also made them late getting to their next venue and so on, it was just a major headache for everyone involved - and all he had to do to avoid all this was turn up on time! Imagine the arrogance Axl must have had to inconvenience literally thousands of people, time and time again, and making all his bandmates lose out on all the money, €100, 000s they should have earned for every concert, just to prove that he was so important that he could make everyone wait around for him. Just shocking behaviour.

6:19 On the soundtrack for The Graduate, it includes five songs by Simon & Garfunkel, with the first and last song being "Sounds of Silence."

I am dressing up as The Graduate this Halloween and will be playing the soundrack on a boombox.

The recounting of Guns N’ Roses break up is completely incorrect. The firing of Steven Adler, and then Izzy quitting during the Use Your Illusion tours did a lot more damage than the festering animosity between Axl and Slash to the classic line up.

6:21 One of my favorite GNR songs is "You Could Be Mine."

It is on the Terminator 2: Judgment Day soundtrack.

2:47 The song "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac was covered by another one of my favorite bands The Corrs on their album Talk on Corners.

Talk On Corners is "the highest-selling album ever by an Irish act" and the "best-selling album in the UK in 1998."

7:23 Slash joined the supergroup Velvet Revolver, who was fronted by Scott Weiland from Stone Temple Pilots (another one of my favorite bands).
