The Shaggs were ahead of their time, or maybe really behind. Either way, they were not in time.

The story of The Shaggs is even crazier than you yet know.
Their paternal grandmother was a palm reader and psychic, and she predicted that her granddaughters would form a band and became world famous rock stars. So their dad, her son, set out to make it happen. He pulled his daughters out of school and made them take music lessons, and then booked a recording studio when he decided they were good enough to record their debut album. Then he found a fly by night record label that would press 1000 copies of it, though he had to pay them to do it.

Well the label went out of business and the owner disappeared with the money and 900 Shaggs albums. And that was the last anyone heard of them until Frank Zappa got his hands on one of the few surviving copies of Philosophy of the World. He loved what he heard in a weird, outsider way, and the Shaggs took off from there.

I am surprised Yoko Ono did not make the list. I guess she is so bad that its not considered music.

that Legendary Stardust Cowboy song sounded like a group of drunk hooligans broke into a studio, stumbled upon a drum set, a guitar a bugle and a microphone, hopped into the booth, stumbled for the record button, found the recording button, and spazzed out.

after waking up in the pile of smashed instruments, still being smashed, themselves they found the recording, gave it to a guy at a local radio station, and it blew up.

after blowing up, they decided to sell their disasterpiece as a single, and needed band name, so they put a piece of swiss cheese on a news paper, picked out the words Legendary, Stardust and Cowboy, and called it a band.

and the guy on the album cover is just a dude they found at a bar who was paid a beer to dress up like a cowboy.

and BOOM, Legendary Stardust Cowboy was born!

i was just gonna comment about how it sounded like a bunch of drunk guys spazzed out in a studio, and accidentally made up a fake backstory for Legendary Stardust Cowboy...

i need friends...

The Legendary Stardust Cowboy was playing grindcore before grindcore even existed.

Fun fact Richard Harris was mostly known for being a actor, most notably he played Dumbledore in the first 2 Harry Potter films before he past away

How can they say the "Chicken Dance" is one of the worse songs. Back in my day it was played at every wedding. Well they normally waited till everyone was half in the bag to play it. Hahahahahaha. Good times. I actually like the MacArthur Park song. Used to listen to it in my younger years quite often. "Someone left the cake out in the rain
.I don't think that I can take it 'Cause it took so long to bake it, and I'll never have that recipe again Oh no!" LMAO. Not sure who came up with those lyrics though. Great video Steve. I can think of lots of other songs that need to be on that list. Love ya.

Anyone that grew up in the UK in the 90s is scarred for life by Agadoo... it plagued every school disco and family event that involved a budget "DJ".
Fun fact, my dad actually worked for and knew very well the writer/singer and unfortunately he was killed when his tour bus crashed in Germany in 1995. Even more unfortunately it didn't stop the song ruining more events for years after.

You’ve gotta realize that The Shaggs actually WERE playing instruments against their will

(10:50) Fun Fact: MacArthur Park was the song "Weird Al" Yankovic parodied & turned it into "Jurassic Park".

Quote from Wikipedia on The Legendary Stardust Cowboy‘s „Paralyzed“:

„In 1973, NASA used the song to wake up members of its space crew. The crew was allegedly so distracted from the shock over the course of the day that NASA forbade the use of the song for that purpose ever again, effectively banning the song from space.“

The best description for the Shagg's song I've ever heard was "it sounds like 3 different people playing 4 different songs"

The Shaggs. Wow. They cemented their place in music history by creating music that can't be diluted by being replicated. The lack of timing is so insane, no one could intentionally cover it. Brilliant !

"Philosophy of the World isn't bad, it's Avant-garde, way ahead of it's time" - The Shaggs, probably.

Richard Harris was a damn good actor. “Harry Potter”, “Orca” among other films.

'Philosophy of the World' is to music as 'The Room' is to movies. Both have a 'so bad it's good' cult following

The crazy thing about the shaggs is they could reproduce all those songs, and actually wrote down the notation and everything. Yea it sounds horrible, but they were dedicated to that sound.

I think The Shaggs “Foot Foot” is a psychedelic masterpiece. It’s like if Picasso wrote a pop song for kids.
