A Volcanic Eruption COULD Occur In Melbourne's CBD

Could a volcanic eruption really happen in the heart of Melbourne's Central Business District (CBD)? In this video, we explore the geological history of the region and the surprising volcanic activity that has shaped Melbourne’s landscape over millions of years.

Melbourne, known for its modern skyline and vibrant city life, sits on ancient volcanic plains, remnants of eruptions from the the Older Volcanics along with more recent widespread eruptions from the Newer Volcanics Province, which stretches across western Victoria. But what does this mean for the future? Could the city be at risk of another eruption, and if so, what would it look like?

In this video, we dive deep into the Cosgrove Hotspot, the geological forces behind Melbourne's volcanic past, and how the landscape around the CBD is covered in basaltic lava flows that date back millions of years. We'll explain the potential dangers a basaltic volcanic eruption may pose to a bustling urban environment like Melbourne. Learn how volcanic vents discovered beneath the city during construction projects remind us of the seismic forces lying dormant below.

We'll also take you through the catastrophic effects a volcanic eruption could have in a modern city—imagine lava flows down Bourke Street, ash clouds blocking out the sun, and widespread destruction of critical infrastructure. Drawing comparisons to similar volcanic fields, such as Auckland's active volcanic landscape, we discuss the steps scientists are taking to monitor and predict volcanic activity in Melbourne.

Whether you're a geology enthusiast or someone curious about the hidden dangers beneath Australia’s second-largest city, this video offers a fascinating look at the intersection of urban life and volcanic risk. Make sure to watch until the end to understand what Melbourne's future could hold and how prepared the city is for this unpredictable natural disaster.

The lava won’t consume the city, it will just fill the potholes and give us smoother drive along our roads

Crikey, you have given the State Government another excuse for the presence of pot holes on our roads.

Honestly, as someone who lives in Melbourne, this sounds like an improvement.
Even if it takes another million years, at least it will still be before the new city rail loop is finished.

There is a volcanos crater in Melbourne botanical gardens. It’s been lined with bluestone and was made into water storage.

Imagine just going to work and having to call your boss you'll be late because a volcano formed in Flinders Street

Yet there’d still be junkies screaming at nobody in particular on Elizabeth Street

Its awesome travelling through Western Victoria and seeing all the volcanoes. They aren't giant towering mountains like you see overseas. Most are only 100-200 meters above the surrounding area. You can walk up a few of them but most are just on private farmland, and the occasional communication tower on top.

Imagine the Victorian budget dealing with such an event; we are already broke.

The American film star Ava Gardner once described Melbourne as "the perfect place to make a film about the end of the world" which I believe she said in 1959. She's not far off the mark.

Driving through the massive granite boulders of Pyalong, just out of Melbourne, gives you no doubt that this area was very active. I love driving through here and looking at the crazy ways the boulders are stacked.

First im hearing about the volcanic vent at southern cross! Thats awesome. From memory, southern cross sits on what was called "batmans hill" by early europeans, because john batman built a cottage there.

Aparently it was a local landmark, and was noted for having masses of wildflowers that are typical of the vic volcanic plains, which makes a lot more sense now
