Yes, you can skip helpdesk. It's not easy but its possible. If you stay in helpdesk. People normally stay 1 to 2 years and find a different job like system admin, network admin, or something else.

I don’t. But I wish I had. It helps you learn so many aspects of an IT shop. Definitely a bonus if you have Service Desk experience.

It’s funny because The Cyber Mentor posted about this yesterday. You provided a really good info about job search with indeed. I feel reassured about not needing to start in help desk. I am hoping to get into a better position in IT when I get my network+ and sec+. I already have My A+.

Hey Jon, appreciate the content! I am transitioning from Hospitality and Healthcare. I have a kid on the way so I wanna find a job ASAP. I keep hearing on Reddit from the IT gatekeepers that you can't skip tech support.

I am doing everything I can to skip it so I got CompTIA A+ | Net+ | SEC+ certifications done. I've fineshed 3 Personal Labs and put them on my resume: Kali Linux in AWS (inspired by your lab) | Nessus Vulnerability Management and an Active Directory Personal Project.

I started applying for System Admin roles and Jr. Sys admin, as well. I was considering SOC analyst roles as well but I think it might be much harder to get into without any IT experience. What other roles would you recommend targeting?

Thank you for your hard work! Appreciate any input!

Help desk experience is beneficial, but its not necessary. Necessary is a black and white term. When i was in my grad program recently, peers would say you should have it, but then, it was just to be more knowledgeable. Ultimately, they'd agree "need" was hyperbole.

I got into cyber security without a degree. Just certificates in CCNA and Security+ and online resources like TryHackMe CTFs.
