WHO I AM

Hello, I'm Jen Campbell. I'm an award-winning poet and bestselling author of twelve books, spanning short stories, poetry, picture books, and nonfiction.

My books for adults include The Beginning of the World in the Middle of the Night, The Girl Aquarium, The Bookshop Book, and The Sunday Times bestselling Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops series. My picture book trilogy Franklin and Luna, and my middle-grade book The Sister Who Ate Her Brothers, are published by Thames & Hudson.

I've won both an Eric Gregory Award and the Jane Martin Poetry Prize, my books have been translated into twenty languages, and I have two new titles forthcoming in 2023 — more details on those soon.

I've worked in the publishing industry for over fifteen years, initially as a bookseller, and now as a freelance editor, content creator and disability advocate. I review books online, in print and on the radio. I run a Youtube channel where I talk about books, the history of fairy tales, and the representation of disability and disfigurement. I also offer online writing workshops and editorial services, give talks at schools, publishing companies, universities and book festivals on a variety of topics, and I run a book club for TOAST clothing.

Evening, folks. Hope you enjoy this video. One correction: Dorothy Tse's book is translated from Chinese, not Korean. My mistake! x

The short stories on the BBC shortlist can be heard on BBC Sounds . Jenn Ashworths story was my favourite.

The new Stranger’s Press collection sounds so good! You caught my attention as soon as you said Switzerland, because I’m learning French and interested in visiting some day soon, but then all the titles were so intriguing too. I have ordered them and will keep my fingers crossed that they traverse the oceans safely. If it all works out I’ll have to order some more from them - some of the SP titles you’ve mentioned previously, especially from Korea, sounded delicious. Thanks for sharing your fresh acquisitions with us, and I’m so glad to hear you’re feeling more yourself!

I'm desperate for Kirsty Logans new book. She's one of my favourite author of all time, and this book sounds completely up my alley. Happy reading and I hope you love all the books you hauled.

Thanks Jen for the info that Granta has just published Sarah Moss’s backlist in new editions. That’s great to hear, since she’s one of the UK’s best novelists, yet one who hasn’t received the kind of honors she deserves. Reading THE FELL, I’m surprised it wasn’t at least long listed for the Booker. Fine video!

I read Cold Earth in January. It was my number one book for months and months and stands at number six now. Hope you enjoy it too!

Many of the books you mention sound quite interesting. I just got a book called Everything is Ok by Debbie Tung. It’s beautifully illustrated as a graphic memoir by the author and is about anxiety and depression. I have two of her other books Quiet Girl in a Noisy World and Book Love which are also wonderful.

So glad that you are feeling better! My right arm doesn't always move correctly because I have a disc problem between my C6 and 7 that hit on a nerve ending. I've found that cupping really helps as when I have an arthritis flare up the neck all the way down to my fingertips Burns or goes numb. Have you ever tried having that done? I have fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis and with that disc situation my neck and arm on my right side constantly have issues but I find that even if I go in and see my therapist and can't move my neck when I leave her facility Im able to rotate it properly with a minimal amount of pain after just one session. You've probably tried that already, but if not it does really help. Loved the video as per usual. Lots of love!

Cold Earth is fantastic, it was the first Sarah Moss I read. A great example of her ability to create tension and doubt.
