What monitor size is best?

Now to get to the bottom of this ancient enigma we must first understand the fundamentals of a great viewing experience which can be broken down into Pixels Per Degree, Distance, and Field Of View.

Now PPD unlike PPI actually is a very relevant metric when determining the size of display you want as not only do we have oodles of data breaking down how much PPD an average human can appreciate, but unlike PPI which simply tells you how many pixels are jammed into a certain area, this measurement takes into account the distance you will be viewing the display as well, making it actually fairly informative.

Now yes, you can still technically have a poor looking image with a high PPD if it’s a low resolution small screen held far away, but regardless, for high resolution displays viewed at a reasonable distance, this metric is definitely useful, since we know based on research that an ideal display will have at least a 60PPD metric to avoid visible pixelization for the average person, and in my testing I needed a PPD of around 80 to eliminate any visible blur, and have a perfectly sharp image.

But now we have to talk about the distance you’ll be viewing your monitor which can be just as important. Now this will be a highly subjective metric, but most would agree that roughly somewhere around 2 feet, which is almost exactly my preferred distance from a 32” monitor. However, likely anywhere between 1.5 to 3 feet would be considered a reasonable viewing distance for the average monitor depending on the size, though keep in mind, a really large display may need more.

For me personally, around 27” in 4K is the sweet spot for me. I’m using a 31, 5” QD-OLED 4K right now because there are no 27” monitors with the same specs. But if there was a 27” option I’d replace my 32” monitor easily. That additional PPI and smaller FOV is important for me.

I use two 27" 4K monitors, sitting fairly close; it works good for me. That's why I need a 27" 4K OLED in 240 Hz or better. Thumbs up.

I am 48 now, and found that a smaller monitor and TV size works better. Yes, it's less "immersive" but there is less eye strain. Also, have the center of the panel level or slight below line of sight. So eyes are not having to angle upwards.

I have a 1440p 360hz 27” monitor and it’s great but honestly I fee like I should go back to 24” I feel like I’ve gotten mechanically much better at my games but sometimes it feels like I am slow to react to things and my hud on games brings my eyes far away from the middle so I die a lot

i have an 32 inch curved monitor right now and its great but for heavy gamers its not great because of visibility, u start not being able to see the whole information on the screen at once meaning you gotta divert attention from the center to the edges. Sucks for mobas or shooters

Without knowing I was on the sweet spot with a 27” 1440p panel sitting at 30” away most times 😮

I think importance of FOV differs massively if youre talking about using a monitor for standard work/productivity vs games and movies. For standard pc stuff, its good to start with your viewing distance, and then work backwards to find a display that remains adequately sharp in terms of PPD, while maximizing screen real estate. Perhaps getting all the way up to 50-60 degree FOV. But for viewing content or gaming i personally find anything above 50degrees wayy too much, i think pushing things into the peripheral for video games /movies can be detrimental sometimes but ymmv. Also 1st person games and 3rd person games feel very different in terms of FOV. In other words desktop and productivity use can get away with wider FOV without being too intrusive on the experience, as long as that PPD is solid and the scaling is correct

I actually really like having my monitor take up a very small area of my FOV. I have a 27 inch monitor and mainly like to recline my chair back giving my about 5ft of space between my eyes and the display. I usually game sitting up around 2.8-3ft away and to me that is getting a bit much for my view. I've noticed taking up more area than that means uncomfortably shifting my eyes around the screen and a slight feeling of claustrophobia.

I still think 24 inches is the best for me. Even after using 27 inch monitors for 3 years i still cannot get used to that size. Wish there were 24 inch 1440p 360hz oleds but alas

I have a 27" 1440p monitor that I view from 20" away. So that makes my FOV 43 degrees and PPD 49 which according to your numbers isn't ideal, but it does look great. If I make the PPD be 60 it would put the monitor too far away for immersion. I actually wish I had a 32" 1440p monitor viewing it from the same distance for more immersion but that would make the numbers even worse so I don't know.

Thx, even though I loved my ultrawide 1440p 34, I've always been bothered by the lack of sharpness. This video finally answered my question about whether I should pick a 4k 32 instead..

32 inch is just too much when sitting not even 2 feet away from the screen...I just bought the MSI OLED and am returning it because it's just burning my eyes...also can't see everything at once..

OLED gaming monitors are unnecessary..yes it's beautiful but meh

Everything is determined by how close you sit and usual desk size the perfect monitor is 32in. Preferably 4k.
