My favorite portion of the the film was the first 30 minutes as the astronauts land and make their trek. Producer Mort Abrahams and director Franklin Schaffner were the consummate professionals. Shout out to Rod Serling and Michael Wilson to their crafting incisive dialog—and naturally to composer Jerry Goldsmith for his exceptional atonal, avant-garde score.

The Gorilla at the jail with the cigar was the best thing ever.

I wasn't even born yet when this came out, but I really like the acting and energy of this film.

As a grade 3 student, I secretly wagged school and took a bus into the big city to see this movie back in the months it was released. I was absolutely captivated by the big posters and the art work associated with this movie. I did get the strap at school when they found out, but it was worth it!

In my top ten of soundtracks of all time. I doubt if Jerry Goldsmith agrees though.

oh yes remember this one so many times but not till 10 years or so after it came out. Always like the sequels as well. Wonder if the areas of Lake Mead where this was filmed look differently today with all the drainage flooding etc.? Thanks for posting. 4:46

Let's see here. They knew they were 'time traveling'. They knew they landed on a planet that looked just like Earth. The day length was the same. The stars and planets were in the same orientation. Yet they couldn't figure out it was Earth until they saw the busted up Statue of Liberty.... Alrighty then.

I loved that at the end he found a damaged replica of the top of the Statue of Liberty.
In the context of the script, this event was never explained.
But it brought a smile anyway.

what might be an interesting plot point is that the absence of the astronaught in earth timeline created an alternate reality in which humanity did indeed blow itself up and had they never left earth humanity would have been fine

Wouldnt they have covered more ground using the boat and river? Especially since its so desolate where they are.

An interesting sequence. Is it completely lost on the astronauts that their new world looks exactly like their old one, despite being 600 light years away, orbiting a completely different sun? Is this proof of the Fermi Paradox, or a satire of scientific objectivity? Surely it would warrant at least a passing comment from one of them, if only to be shouted - or laughed - down by the others. Thanks for posting.

The movie using of computer generated
images is not always the winner.
This 1969 film from the script, castings,
costumes, the apes is more humanoid
and vividness, film cutting and
directorship is unparalleled and even
exciting than its successor.
