Interstellar is a 2014 epic science-fiction film co-written, directed, and produced by Christopher Nolan. It stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, Matt Damon, and Michael Caine. Set in a dystopian future where humanity is struggling to survive, the film follows a group of astronauts who travel through a wormhole near Saturn in search of a new home for mankind.

Brothers Christopher and Jonathan Nolan wrote the screenplay, which had its origins in a script Jonathan developed in 2007. Christopher produced Interstellar with his wife, Emma Thomas, through their production company Syncopy, and with Lynda Obst through Lynda Obst Productions. Caltech theoretical physicist and 2017 Nobel laureate in Physics[4] Kip Thorne was an executive producer, acted as a scientific consultant, and wrote a tie-in book, The Science of Interstellar. Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Legendary Pictures co-financed the film. Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema shot it on 35 mm movie film in the Panavision anamorphic format and IMAX 70 mm. Principal photography began in late 2013 and took place in Alberta, Iceland and Los Angeles. Interstellar uses extensive practical and miniature effects and the company Double Negative created additional digital effects.

Interstellar premiered on October 26, 2014, in Los Angeles, California. In the United States, it was first released on film stock, expanding to venues using digital projectors. The film had a worldwide gross over $677 million (and $773 million with subsequent re-releases), making it the tenth-highest grossing film of 2014. It received acclaim for its performances, direction, screenplay, musical score, visual effects, ambition, themes, and emotional weight. It has also received praise from many astronomers for its scientific accuracy and portrayal of theoretical astrophysics. Since its premiere, Interstellar gained a cult following, and now is regarded by many sci-fi experts as one of the best science-fiction movies of all time. Interstellar was nominated for five awards at the 87th Academy Awards, winning Best Visual Effects, and received numerous other accolades.

I felt so bad for Romelly in this scene. He's such a brave, strong soul for being patient that long and having faith in his crew members. How he didn't go insane all alone for 23 years is beyond me.

He's holding his hands. No human touch for decades. He needs a hug.

The way he was expecting some sort of embrace from his partners, but Mathew just walks right past him, and he doesn't know how to react. Melts my heart.

The fact that he waited 23 years in complete isolation and kept his composure in that manner shows that he was mentally prepared for the mission and any scenario, something he probably acquired through more life experience, in contrast to Brand who thought she was prepared by mostly studying books. He kept his calm even after Matthew's character completely brushed him off, most of us would've been shouting angrily all over him at that point, but he knew the mission was bigger than himself.

LITTERALLY Dr. Mann, the "best of them" could barely spend 11 years alone, but Rom spent 23 and held the faith, really the best of humanity!

"There's nothing here for us"

Crazy thing for Romilly to hear after patiently waiting for 23

What always struck me about this scene was just how unconcerned the film seemed to be with what that man went through. 23 years, and all we care about is Matthew McConaughey's kids.

The way Matthew acted this scene is brilliant. He goes from the exhaustion of the journey to the joy of seeing his son on screen, to pure heartbreak and despair all in one shot. Acting at its finest.

23 years in solitary isolation. We don’t do that to the worst of criminals, instead we have the decency to end their lives. Even those in isolation see a guard now and again. This man had nothing but the cosmos to keep him company.

"I've been waiting 23 years--"

"Yeah, that's great. Look, just came to grab my toothbrush, looks like we'll be spending the night down there."

I cannot imagine how lonely it'd be to spend 23 years knowing your crew might not come back. The fact that he did not go insane like Matt Damon did is beyond imaginable.

One of the most mindblowing and horrifying moments in this film is when they realize that the lost astronaut's has not in fact been transmitting for years, but instead, due to the relativistic effect from the black hole's gravity, she died on impact, which was 15 minutes ago in the planet's local time...

I turn 23 in just a couple months. I still, as of right now, have not been ALIVE as long as Romelly was alone in orbit on the ship. That’s insane to me. 23 years encompasses my entire life including most of my gestation, my entire memory and more. And all he had were messages from home and a sarcastic robot to keep him company.

He deserved better. Poor guy.

This whole scene was heart breaking. At 0:28 you can even see how socially awkward Romelly is when Cooper walks by due to years of isolation. Amazing acting

I remember the entire theater being shocked when he said 23 years. Time was truly the antagonist in this movie.

Romily should have gotten the
"Being a Good Sport" award for sticking around for 23 years and never once complaining.

This whole scene with Cooper watching the recordings just rips your heart out.

hey remember how they went down to that one planet and got stuck there for several hours which equated to 23 years in relativistic terms, all because one certain doctor ignored warnings to return to her shuttle because she wanted to grab a flight recorder, and it wound up estranging one crew member from his family, killing another, and forcing the third to wait those 23 years in solitude on a space station lightyears away from earth?

This is the point where I'd be asking said doctor: was the information worth it?

After 8 years, I finally watched this movie on Netflix last week. It was amazing.
