Should you still buy an old quad core Intel Xeon workstation with plans to upgrade it for gaming? Today we're taking a look at an old Dell T3500 I found online for just under £100 with the hope of answering that question.

This reminds me of the old T7500 I paired with a Xeon X5650 and GTX 1060 for just under £200 back in early 2019. For the price that was a fantastic system

If this was the Verge they'd be bragging about that Xeon. That's right, they got one.

I see a guitar there, I'm a fan of guitars as much as I like my computers. Maybe you should do us a bit one day using it.

I got an R9 290x for about 80$ converted, I cleaned it, put it in a similar-spec system and it's working quite nicely

i almost thought you would slap on the 1050 Ti singleslot inno3D version seeing the case and brackets. but you managed to get a 1650 in there, so thats neat

I'm rocking a HP Z600 with dual X5650 and 24 GBs of RAM. Paired it with a 1650 Super. Handles all I need it to.

Currently writing this from my T3500 :) They are great machines, I've got 12GB RAM, X5670 (six cores) and an RX 480. The six cores are a good upgrade, but still I do agree they aren't really worth pairing with much more than an RX500 series card. They are reaching the end of their lives when it comes to gaming, but for now I think they're perfectly fine for anyone wanting a budget used system!

A t5500 from the e-cycle shop served me super well. I love it when people learn they can get into PC for a low price

I have flipped sooo many of these into basic gaming machines, usually with a GTX 1060 or RX570 added. Also I tend to zip-tie in an 80mm fan to turn it into an active CPU cooler...

Server parts are awesome. Got a z420 and a xeon e5-2689 (8 cores, 16 threads, boosts to 3.3ghz on all fortunately). It came with 16gb ddr3 1600mhz and a 2tb hdd. I threw in a 1650 super and a 960gb SSD and the thing just flies

Edit: got this for a good friend of mine, I have a laptop myself.

I have one of these T3500's: The stock PSU can easily be swapped out for an aftermarket one. Mine has a EVGA 750w G2 supernova PSU inside it and it fits perfectly, it powers a 6-core Xeon W3690 and GTX 980. My dedicated Win 7 machine :)

I just acquired a ThinkStation S20 a few months ago, paired with a Xeon W3550 CPU, 12GB of (no ECC) DDR3 RAM & a used GTX 950 for $30 and tbh it's a pretty decent machine and most games run okay on it :) (on med/low setting)

These old dell precision units are always great, I currently run a T3610 which I paid £150 for, threw an E5 2690 at it, 2x16gb of ram (waiting for funds for another 2x16 lot), and threw a 980ti at it, all in all I'm less than 300 quid into it

I remember at the trade school I used a T7400, dual socket w/ 2 xeons for a total of 8 cores, with 24gb of ram, 2 R7 low profile cards, thing was really nice, I'd almost take it over my current, thing was a beast
