Thought it couldn’t get more confusing than Intel cpus but here we are

BTW, some Xeon cpus are incompatible even on the same socket, it depends on chipset and manufacturer.

A friend of mine chose a Xeon E1231v3 instead of an Core I7 4770K back in the Haswell days, its only difference was the lack of inegrated graphics so no loss there.

*Turned a fair few workstations into gaming machines on a budget, the Xeons have very good price to performance on some of the older gens*

Xeons are very underrated, especially second hand ones. They're super tough so they're safe bets for second hand and there are quite a lot available making it super cheap and easy to get. But if you don't know why you'd need one, probably means you don't need one

I love it when Linus (And you) make those "take a cheap PC from the garbage or an old office PC and make it into a gaming PC", and Xeons are a great base for those systems

I'm amazed how the Intel Haswell xeons perform even to this day. My Xeon E3-1231v3 I've upgraded to since 4 years ago really improved on my now 7 year old gaming rig's performance on multi-treaded games.

Using a Xeon E5 1620V2 LGA 2011 CPU paired with an RX580, it has served me well for 4 years now

I have a 12 year old Xeon X5650 in my PC and it still works like a charm

Can't believe Intel is using CSGO tier ranks to separate it's own CPUs.

My first foray into a gaming PC build was with a $24 Xeon X3440. If you don't give a damn about playing the latest games, an old Xeon paired with a GTX 10 series is a great start.

Someone selling a used Core i7 used is going to be able to get a lot more for it than someone selling the Xeon version of it. That's because far more potential buyers know about the Core versions but don't know anything about the Xeons. So that results in Xeons selling for less cost used.

The only benefit of Xeons is having a lot of memory bandwidth which is crucial for memory bound workloads like scientific simulations and working with huge datasets.
While almost all regular CPUs have more raw compute power which are great for compute bound applications like single threaded workloads, 3d modeling and rendering applications.

''Can I use this?'' - ''Well, sure, if you know what you're doing.'' This broke the internet today.

You should talk about used workstation gpus. Depending on the architecture, It could easily compete with video encoding (streamline gpus) with an extremely low wattage.

Back in 2018, i put 2 intel xeon x5690s into a dell precision t7500 workstation with 48gb of ram and a gtx 1070 ti. Was a beast. Upgraded to a ryzen because the 1333mhz ddr3 ram was slowing me down
