Where did the space rock that wiped out the large dinosaurs actually land? Let me show you...

This is the impact of a giant space rock wider than Mount Everest is tall from 66 million years ago. But for a long time, we didn’t know it was there...

We made a whole video about the cutting edge of dinosaur research, check it out!

If anyone is wondering, the element she was referring to is Iridium

Mad respect to the asteroid for allowing our ancestors to flourish

It feels so strange that, growing up, what killed the dinosaurs was one of the biggest mysteries, and yet now, the idea that a meteor wiped them out is basically common knowledge

Saw a map showing where the crater hit when I was a child but misunderstood it and believed the gulf of Mexico itself was the crater for more years than I'm willing to admit.

Science is so wild. A thing happened 65 million years ago, an unfathomable number, and science was like i think a thing happened, and sure enough, evidence was found for it. I mean how cool is that. When I took all my chem classes, I felt like I had godlike powers when I change chemicals into all new chemicals. Like I was doctor Manhattan altering the matter around me. So cool.

My astronomy teacher worked with the guys who proved that’s where the impact site was! They made the discovery when they found bits of glass at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico caused by the intense heat of the meteor! Super cool!!!

We are closer to the last dinosaurs than the last dinosaurs were to the first dinosaurs.

You’re never going to convince me it wasn’t smoking cigarettes that did them in.

Fun fact: oil companies had actually found out about this sight sooner than the whole world but told no one

I'm glad its finally getting more clear. When i was in school it was just taught that the asteroid landed in the Gulf of Mexico, which made me and a lot of other people believe that the entire gulf was formed by the crater. Its not really a bif deal, but the knowledge being narrowed down and properly taught means a lot to me

PEMEX, the nationalized Mexican oil company, had already plotted out the gravitational fluxuations of the crater and had the data the scientists needed for years; but refused to give it up since it was considered company secrets....and therefore national secrets.

Fun fact: Those aren't just any scientists. They're Luis Alvarez(experimental physicist who worked with J Robert Oppenheimer on the Manhatten Project and was there for the Trinity Test), and his geologist son Walter Alvarez.

and together, they developed what's now known as the Alvarez Hypothesis, which proposed that the extinction of the Non-Avian dinosaurs was caused by an asteroid impact.

The more you know

This was also what gave evidence to the idea of mass extinctions. We know so much now that we take it for granted, but these two men (Luis and Walter Alvarez) were the ones who found evidence that the dinosaurs had all been wiped out by an asteriod strike, which had been theorised earlier but had little to no tangible proof. This was in the 1980s! That's how new the evidence for mass extinction is! That's how recently we started learning about them, and we know so much now! It's incredible.

(Edited for accuracy. I'm learning too!)

And now we mammals have to pay taxes and work until we die.

Please tell folks that they weren’t a couple of scientists but father and son. That just makes me happy.

impact craters are so unbelievably cool. they're everywhere, and chixulub only ranks 3rd biggest in the ones we've found so far.

Damn. It came so close to destroying the chicxulub center, that wouldve been disastrous
