As a over the road truck driver I once witnessed this in the desert one night. No boom heard, but the night turned into day.

You know you're old as hell when you still call Russia the Soviet Union
EDIT: *people calling me out saying "33 years isn't that long" are admitting to being boomers*

EDIT: I pissed off fellow millennials 💀💀💀

EDIT FEBRUARY 2025: Until you acknowledge that a lot can happen in 33 years you will never gain my respect

"There's no better way to be warned than to have a band-aid cover your injuries that could have vaporized you or rendered your species extinct."...now that a quote of all time...

The Tunguska event is the stuff of nightmares. More powerful than some nukes, and it just arrived out of nowhere

It's crazy how space can just go "OK this place doesn't exist anymore."

A similar thing happened in Halifax in 1917. A ship, loaded with explosives, was on fire in the harbour. People were watching from their homes and, when the ship exploded, hundreds of people were blinded by glass when their windows blew in. 1, 762 people died, and about 9, 000 were injured.

I remember hearing about Tunguska. That laid onto the ground SO MANY TREES, it must have been a level of power beyond anything that we, as a people, know about.

I remember that one, and some twit of a reporter asked the expert being interviewed if he thought global warming is increasing the frequency of meteor events.

Most people have no idea how close we came to a catastrophic collision when that meteor exploded over Chalubynsk.

If the meteor has remained intact for another 3-4 seconds, it would have impacted, sending thousands of tons of dust and debris into the atmosphere. It would have nearly levelled Chalibynsk, rather than just shattering some windows. Meanwhile, the surrounding forest land would have been set ablaze.

We dodged a huge bullet.

I was born in Chelyabinsk and My mom was one of the few who witnessed the asteroid. She sais it was like a earthquake and she prayed for us Kids and held us close the entire time

My family in Chelyabinsk witnessed this occurrence. It is as Neil said, glass all around had been shattered and the people were left with only minor injuries. My Grandfather was on the balcony at the time and just saw it collide into a nearby park.

Honestly, I'll still look out the window if I see a meteorite explode
