To the viewer reading this: I spent over 200 hours on this video, I hope you enjoy :)

This isn't The Everest Discrepancy, and its not a video of solar sands, or emplemon, or lemmino's. This is The K2 Summit Disasters. This video essay deeply covers the events of the 1939 Karakoram Expedition to K2, and it also covers the 1986 Disaster atop K2. The 1939 Expedition to K2 and the 1986 K2 Disaster, aim to conquer this mountain.

I’m not sure what’s crazier, deciding everyone was dead and not sending up supplies, or being at the top, realizing supplies weren’t being sent up, and not descending immediately.

What’s so crazy to me is that the east face of k2 has still never been climbed, like think of all the technology we have and yet this monster of mountain still has a challenge that even humans in their unlimited determination haven’t been able to conquer

Cromwell was mad at Weisner for leaving Wolf behind, yet Cromwell had left all THREE of them behind and had stripped or at the least not maintained the lower camps should they have made it back down. Absolutely absurd.

It's a common misconception that Sherpa are generic 'people who live in mountainous areas and help foreigners climb.' They are a mostly Buddhist ethnic group from the Himalayas and some of them are mountaineers who make a living as porters and guides for foreign climbers. Anyone who is not ethnically Sherpa is a porter, and those terms are not interchangeable. Porters on K2 obviously used to be mostly ethnically Sherpa, but now that K2 is administered by Pakistan, most (but of course not all) K2 porters are Pakistani Muslims from the Shimshal Valley. Muhammad Ali was one of these, and he wasn't just a porter but something called a sardar, which essentially means 'leader' or 'guide.' I highly, HIGHLY recommend the documentary "K-2 & The Invisible Footmen, " which goes into the lives and sacrifice of Pakistani porters on K2 and is free to watch on youtube.

Casarotto's end really feels unfair to me, he turned around in time to get almost all the way back down, only to be at the wrong place, the wrong time.
It was amazing that Dudley Wolfe managed to stay alive that long not only at that high altitude, without also without water, food, and real warmth. But eventually I sadly think he was basically a dead man who was still alive.
After going through what he'd been through, a few days with water and food, wasn't going to make him able to assist in getting himself down K2. Actually, Art Gilkey which you mentioned towards the end, is a great example of how difficult it is to try to help someone down who isn't able to walk themselves. They were 6 persons trying to help Gilkey, and it nearly killed all of them when they tried to get him down.

Please don't rush. You have great information. Take your time. The bits of dialogue have been pasted so close together it can become difficult to listen to. We pause between sentences when we speak normally, so allow yourself to do the same here (not trying to make you feel bad. It is something I have had pointed out to me when I do oral presentations, so you're not alone. Just trust yourself and don't panic. You clearly tried hard to jam it all into 30 minutes, but people will listen to your videos if they are longer).

"The climber" manga included a lot about K2. But this video just took a deep delve into the mountain. Really glad someone covered a topic about this mountain. And people who want to spend a quality time reading a good manga, go read "the climber". It's one of the best mangas of all time.

That memorial, and burying any found body parts and visiting to pay respects before ascending is a very touching, respectful tradition. Thanks for covering it.

K2 absolutely terrifies me.
The look of it...
The bone chilling stories of death, the extreme weather and the soulless name is terrifying.
A dark, cold and depressing place where you know deep down that you are likely to die a slow and painfull deathat the hands of the harsh weather...
I have a simmilar feeling to Mt. Everest although not as bad because i've made an idea in my mind that Everest is this high and mighty peak, and that death just comes along as an accident and just normal but with K2...It's just death. K2 Is the embodyment of death and suffering itself...
