The INSANE Wilco Story | K2 Mountain Climbing TRAGEDY

On August 2, 2008, after reaching the summit without supplemental oxygen, Van Rooijen went missing after an accident on K2. Eleven other climbers died on the mountain. Van Rooijen was lost and missed camp IV in his descent. After two nights he found Sherpa Pemba and teammate Cas van de Gevel in camp 3 on his own . Van Rooijen and his teammate Cas van de Gevel descended under their own power to base camp, where third-degree frostbite symptoms were found on his toes. In the end he had to miss all his toes because of this. Earlier in 1995 he was seriously injured on the K2, when he was hit by stone chips.

When your Sherpa gets high altitude sickness, you know you are screwed.

I love that the bottle neck is the hardest part for the climbers and the sherpas just do it without ropes to secure the ropes and we still focused on the climbers

I choose not to put myself in potentially life threatening situations because I have a fiancé and 2 daughters and have much more to live for than my own personal thrills.

"Wilco was on the wrong side of the mountain." Yeah, UP
And as far as I'm concerned the right side of the mountain is 'down'

According to Pemba Gyalje Sherpa, who rescued some of the survivors, Irish climber Ger McDonnell died trying to save a party of Korean climbers who had fallen and become tangled in their ropes. He was the first Irishman to summit the mountain. Ger's body was never found. Not everyone thought only of themselves. I enjoyed your telling of this tragic but complex series of bad decisions and bad luck, thanks for posting.

Climbing K2 and cave diving are my worst nightmares.

For those who want more details on this tragedy: read "The summit, how triumph turned to tragedy", written by Pemba Sherpa

Hearing screams as you sit at the top of an icefall in the middle of the night had to give those people PTSD forever

Wilco has a good story, but the real story is Ger. A hero who stayed on the mountian when others descended in order to try save as many lives as possible and lost his life in the process.

To my mind it isn't heroic to leave a 7 month old child knowing the odds are stacked that he'll never see you again. The English mountaineer Hargreaves left her 4 and 6 year old motherless when she perished. I think they are insanely brave (emphasis on the former) but when there are little children in the mix I'm not a fan of compartmentalisation.

Fun fact: Wilco is from The Netherlands, which does not feature any mountains and is almost completely flat (and at sea level). Only in the extreme south you can find some small hills. So a Dutch mountaineer is like a Swiss sailor.

The background/history of the place and the people involved really makes your videos shine.

Even if they pick, what looks like, the perfect window to climb…. It can change so fast w no time to get back. It’s insane but yet fascinating that people want to conquer these mountains!

I love how on the summit his thought isn't, "Oh no, I might never see my wife and infant son again" but rather, "Oh no, my toes are frostbitten so I might never climb again."

My friend died climbing K2. It was so awful, his equipment failed and he and his friend fell 😢
