Neodymium: How this supermagnet almost started a trade war

Ever heard of Neodymium? It’s one of the most essential elements that nobody talks about. Without it, our EV wouldn’t drive, our phones wouldn’t work and our wind turbines wouldn’t generate energy. This is a story of a rare earth metal that has many countries scrambling.

We're destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn't need to be this way. Our new channel Planet A explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world — and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. Every Friday we'll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess.

Did you know about neodymium? Which element should we tackle next?

For a second I thought the reason the boats crashed at the start was because they were both carrying neodymium magnets 😂

How about not mixing in music louder than the narrator?

Nice watching Kiyo again in Planet A weekly reports! 😊

Neodymium is crazy strong! I saw a video where a guy showed a strong enough one suspended his whole body weight in midair!

Thank you Kiyo for not speaking "Fry" or "Uptalk"!

Yes I have some of them if you have a old hard drive you will find some in it.

I casually opened our old hardrives for these magnets😂😂😂

I wanted to watch the program but it was almost impossible to listen to the commentary due to the ridiculously loud music in the background

I learned a lot by watching this video. Thank you!

it is actually quite easy to demagnetize neodymium magnets. just get them real hot. Poof no more magnet.

There are a lot of motors and generators which don't need any magnet. Indeed you can create even stronger magnetic fields with electricity. Howerver neodymium magnet are cheap enough to still be used.

Good remember magnet is a specific iron oxide with three oxygen and two iron, Fe2O3, different from the commun rust, a simple iron corrosion, FeO, but with a big property difference like useful magnetism and useless rust. I mean in chemistry, only a little difference like numbers of atoms in a molecule is enough for a great difference of property like neodymiun magnet alloy....

As a physics student in the 1960s I knew of Cobalt-Samarium magnets. How do they compare with Neodymium magnets?

So why was there such an approar about the collided boats...? I thought I watched the video attentively to uncover this mystery...

I have these inside my Rubik's cube

Don’t these super strong magnets also power things like high speed rail such as maglev tech?

You guys create good content, Time Stamp 0:19 please correct china's map; Ladakh, Sikkim and Arunachal are integral part of Bharat (India). Its just wont give more piece of Land to China. They have already taken the Aksai Chin forcefully.

wearing a heart monitor was a fun one because I had to hold everything with a magnet in it far away from my body. I couldn't use a microwave or headphones etc. however I feel lucky because I don't need an implant. I walked through an isle containing craft magnets though when simulating day to day stress tho that was funny
