Step 1: Get a clean copy of windows fonts from the link in the description.

Step 2: Create a backup of Fonts registry hive

1. Open the Registry Editor by typing “Regedit” without quotes in the run prompt. You can open the run prompt by using Window Key + R on the keyboard.

2. Navigate NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts and click the File -> Export option to save a backup.


Step 3: Remove the existing Fonts hive After taking a backup of the fonts hive, make sure Fonts hive is selected and delete the entire Fonts hive. This is a very critical step for this solution. (If you skip this step and do not delete this registry hive and simply copy the font files, after you reboot your machine you might have the same issue.) So this step is very critical to fix this issue.

Step 4: Restore the default font files we downloaded in Step 1

1. Copy the contents of the font files that you got from Step 1 to C:\Windows\Fontsdirectory of the affected machine. This step will prompt you to confirm if it can continue to install all font, you can safely choose ok and let it continue with the install. This will install all the fonts and register all the fonts in the registry in the same Fonts group you just deleted in Step 3

2. You can also install the font by selecting all the font files and then right on the selected list and choose the first option that shows the UAC (User Account Control) icon.

3. Reboot the machine after copying the font files even though you might notice that the text is now become readable almost everywhere.

4. After reboot verify that you can still see the text in readable format.

Final Thoughts:

One last check after restoring all the font files, open C:\Windows\Fonts folder, and your fonts windows should look something like the in the video with the list of fonts you just installed.

No need to count each folder if the registry editor is also unreadable. Just try and find the fonts folder downloaded in step one (easier if using IDM), and install one of the fonts in that folder. it turns everything back to readable font temporarily, some words are cut in half but its better than the symbols. Then you can proceed with everything else as in the video. Worked for me at least! Thanks iSpecss!!

This video deserves more recognition and respect. Thank you iSpecs! All the other solutions available online are super complicated, not explained well and confusing. This video has solved my entire problem.

Just a few tips to anyone who's struggling with the same problem.
• As you can't see and read the items in the "redgedit" section, try counting the folders and take the above video as a reference.
• Press F2 on the files and then copy the file name to a new chrome browser or an empty notepad to know the name of the file
• If you are trying to copy or paste any files and can't read the options after right click, then just press F2 on any folder available and rename it with "copy" or "paste" and see the symbols that are coming up. That will help you to read the right click options.

Thank you thank you thank you!! Especially for the downloadable fonts, I didn't have a clean set on hand, so I really needed that. Going through my registry with massive symbols and like the comment below said, I was just counting folders and symbols to see if they matched up, I was very amazed I found the fonts registry at all. The font on my system had changed to wingding or some goddamn font like it - although I couldn't read anything on my screen, I followed your video step by step by counting the folders and rechecking the registry folder name by copying and pasting the name in to an empty chrome browser tab.
