The M1 Macs Will Only Last 2-5 Years...

Media outlets are storming the internet saying that M1 Machines are intentionally being targeted by Apple to reduce the lifespan of the product.

I give my thoughts on the situation after reading some articles and going through the Twitter feed itself. This does seem to be a problem with memory swapping, however, it's inconclusive what the root cause is. Is it because of the M1 chip? Is it because of Big Sur? Is it a memory leaks? There are a lot of variables at play here, and with early stages of development happening its hard to pinpoint the cause.

It does seem from my judgment that M1 does a significant amount of memory swapping and with machines only at 16GB max, comparing 32GB of RAM on an Intel machine would be apples to oranges.

Should you be concerned? For the majority of people, probably not. If you conduct the same test and find that within 2-3 months that you are at 1-2%, you're okay. If you're sitting a 3% plus, then you could start to worry about what could happen within the next 5 years. We will have to wait to see what Apple says or if they even decide to address this but clearly, a bug is lurking around macOS.

*** Important UPDATE:

- this bug was fixed in the Mac OS Big Sur 11.4 software update. This issue was caused by a data reporting error which overestimated ssd usage.

I’ll be here after 5 years when my M1 Air is still alive and kicking

“I do what any person with a brain does, ignore headlines, read the article, do online research, etc” hahaha I guess we have half of the population without brains. That explains a lot.

They said something similar about SSDs when they first came out, and I was told my 2012 MacBook Air SSD would eventually crap out in a few years the more often data was over written. It’s still working perfectly fine.

How refreshing to have a nice, quiet, calm "well, let's look at this" approach without all the hyperbole. Subscribed.

Apple's iPhones have processors from 4-5 years ago that STILL run current iOS pretty decently considering its age and lack of ram. Be real here ppl just don't wanna admit apple had just cemented itself as the King of silicon.

If my M1 last at least 10 years, I think I got my money’s worth. However, I prefer they last longer, as I always donate my older PCs and Macs when I upgrade. 👍👍👍

Everyone please support the "Let's get Right to Repair passed!" gofundme from Louis Rossmann, even if you just share it and let people know about the issue. This could go a long way in forcing apple to make stuff repairable again.

As a 12-years Windows user and an Apple hater, I have huge respect to Apple for this. I just ordered a MBA, expecting to be shipped in 2 weeks. Nvidia and Intel both can dig their own graves now.

In 4 years, people will figure out how to swap out a soldered on SSD. I'm waiting for an used M1 when it drops below $600. Last week an used M1 for $650 on slickdeal, we're getting there.

Thank you so much Dayo for this great information. I am a professional librarian, and I really appreciate your "instinct" to do due diligence research before accepting the hype and the media claims. You have now convinced me to go ahead and get the M1 mini, as I am just coming from a late 2012 Mini that lasted for 9-10 years (which, in my opinion, is a LONG time for a computer to do well, and it is still not doing so badly!). If people think their computers should last until 2037 as their main computer, they should just go buy a typewriter, because they are the wrong customer for the product, and not the other way around. Again, thanks. And I love how when you make a pronunciation error, or something like that, you leave it in and turn it into a joke - you are in on the joke, and I love people like that. THANK YOU!

Ssd degradation is exponential. As your Ssd gets filled up. Imagine this scenerio. 60% of storage is used. The rest 40% of the Ssd will mainly be write and rewrite. That's why most laptops have a software to notify you to have less than 80% storage used to increase the lifespan. Look up linus video on Ssd.

Agreed - blown out of proportion - lots of haters would love to see Apple fail.
