Exponential Functions - Example on Radioactive Decay and Half-Life

A while ago I made a video on exponential functions but didn't get the chance to go over some very useful examples. Which is why I made this video, where I go over an example on radioactive decay and determining the exponential function of Strontium-90 decay if we are given it's half life. I also go over what half life is and show how to determine the required time to decay to a certain mass or the mass after a certain time. This concept is very important especially in dating fossils and other materials and has led to good estimates of the age of the earth. So make sure to watch this video!

I don't always measure decay of radioactive material but when I do it usually follows an exponential curve ;)

I remember last year (8th grade) in my science class we were studying geology and how we know how old fossils were. Our problems were finding how much of a substance decayed given the age and half-life. One one of them problems, the age wasn't a multiple of the half-life, and many students went up to the teacher for help. I knew about exponential functions and I could figure it with ease. I don't remember what the problem was, but I'll give an example to show *cont*.

*cont* A substance has 20 mg of C_14 and has a half life of 5, 700 years (as it is for C_14, I believe). How much will be left after 2850 years? (half of 5700). I said it would be equal to 20/(2^0.5) = 14.1421... mg, while everybody else was told by the teacher since it's half the half life it would be half of half what would decay, or 15 mg left. I explained to the teacher my way and he said it was wrong. I knew it wasn't, but I just went along since it wasn't an eighth-grade question.

Trying to use multiples of the half life will get you into difficulties, use the exponential function!!

haha maybe you should've been teaching that class ;)

half life 25 tears is times that by 10 (250) years
