ABOUT ME: Hallo, Servus, and welcome to my channel! My name is Felicia (Feli), I'm 27, and I'm a German living in the USA! I was born and raised in Munich, Germany but have been living in Cincinnati, Ohio off and on since 2016. I first came here for an exchange semester during my undergrad at LMU Munich, then I returned for an internship, and then I got my master's degree in Cincinnati. I was lucky enough to win the Green Card lottery and have been a permanent resident since 2019! In my videos, I talk about cultural differences between America and Germany, things I like and dislike about living here, and other experiences that I have made during my time in the States. Let me know what YOU would like to hear about in the comments below. DANKE :)

I'm old enough to remember when the drinking age in at least half of the States was still 18. The federal government really pressured the States to raise the drinking age to 21. Interestingly, on military installations it is my understanding that the drinking age is still 18.

I generally take the attitude that if you're old enough to vote and you're old enough to fight, you're old enough to have a beer 🍺.

In Australia many large shopping centres post signs requiring the wearing of shirt and shoes.
To enter you must be wearing shoes and shirt.
Surprisingly there's no requirement for pants!

As a German, I just recently noticed that the yellow container inside the Kinder Surprise Eggs are supposed to look like egg yolks😂 I never thought about that before.

I'm all for protecting Bigfoot. He's a righteous dude. Keeps to himself and doesn't bother anyone. As for donkeys, let 'em sleep where they want to sleep. Donks are awesome!

In Alabama, it's illegal for a person to walk down the street with an ice cream cone in their back pocket.

Back when most people got around on horseback, horse thieves would put ice cream in their pocket to lure horses away without being charged with stealing.

11:50 Fun fact: In WWII German spies tried to infiltrate American Army units by wearing American uniforms. Being German they took great care to fully prepare themselves learning all about the area they were pretending to be from, making sure their accent was perfect and learning all those things that Americans are suppose to know, like the words to the Star Spangled Banner, making sure they could sing the entire song on command.
And it was this that was their downfall. Being asked to sing the 2nd verse was a trap, because most Americans don't even know the song has more than the first verse.
I can guess it scared the hell out of Americans, "Hey buddy, prove your aren't a damn spy. What is the 2nd verse of the National Anthem?"
Meanwhile the German spy thinks, "I got this!" and sings out his own doom. Spies are not protected by the Geneva Convention.

I had a German lady as a neighbor for about 12 years, are when i was a little kid she used to give me Kinder Überraschung. I loved them so much as a little kid! She was such a sweet neighbor, i really miss her! I like to think she is my unbiological grandmother 😂.

I love that you mentioned donkeys in bathtubs. I had a book as a kid called donkeys can't sleep in bathtubs about crazy, mostly not applied, laws.

The prohibition on "non-nutritive items" dates back to the late 19th Century when the Pure Food Act was passed. It was because unscrupulous manufacturers were putting various things in foodstuffs that had no food value, for example, sawdust. If you will, compare this to the German Purity Laws concerning making beer.

My favorite weird US law (though it may be one of the urban legends) has always been that it's Illegal to go whale fishing in Nebraska. Nebraska is in the middle of America and has no access to the ocean.

I was raised in Washington, and Sasquatch is the unofficial state animal across many counties, so killing one would be equal morally to killing a Bald Eagle (US National bird)

In Orlando, FL it's illegal to tie your Elephant to a Light Post. Story: Back in the early 1900s it got to be a fad in Central Florida to have exotic animals as pets to show how rich you were. Some people owned elephants and would ride them to town. People were tying up their elephants to light post. I guess the elephants would eventually try to move and tear down the light post.

In Scotland it is illegal to capture the Loch Ness monster.

Thanks for the video and especially for making it clear on WHERE the laws are in place (not all through the US) and also that a number of them aren't necessarily real and more folklore. I've always respected your attention to detail and making sure to be fair to the different sides when making your videos!

In Cincinnati we found large signs in the toilet of several restaurants that it was illegal not to wash your hands after using the toilet! How lucky that it was there, otherwise I would never have guessed it!

In Alabama, it's illegal to wear a fake mustache that causes laughter in church.
In Alaska, it's illegal to wake a sleeping bear to take a photo.
In California, it's illegal to eat a frog that has died in a frog-jumping contest.
In Georgia, it's illegal to keep an ice cream cone in your back pocket on Sunday.
In Hawaii, it's illegal to place a coin in anyone's ear.
In Idaho, it's illegal to give your sweetheart a box of chocolates that weighs more than 50 pounds.
In Iowa, all one-armed piano players must perform for free.
In Maryland, it's illegal to appear in a public park wearing a sleeveless shirt.
In Minnesota, it's illegal to cross state lines if you are wearing a duck on the top of your head.
In New Jersey, it's illegal for a man to knit during fishing season.
In North Carolina, it's illegal for an elephant to be used to plow cotton fields.
In Wyoming, it's illegal to take a photo of a rabbit from January to April.

I'm not kidding, these are real laws.
Cheers, Feli.

When I was a teenager in Michigan there was a big case over an obscure 100 year old law. A man was in a canoe (can't remember if it was a lake or river) and he tipped. He went on a loud profanity laden tirade for several minutes. A state trooper was there and cited him under this old law banning profanity in front of women and children, of which there were many in the park. The man fought the ticket and I think he was convicted and told to pay because it was a real law. It became a cause celeb for awhile because of the first amendment and was eventually overturned.

In the distant past strangers might be expected to identify themselves at a police station. I worked for the US Census Bureau in the 1970's and there were a number of towns where I was expected to tell the police I was in town before knocking on doors.
