New search for Jay Slater underway in Tenerife | BBC News

A new search is under way in Tenerife for missing British teenager Jay Slater following calls from Spanish police for volunteer help.

On Friday the Guardia Civil asked voluntary organisations and members of the public with expertise in difficult conditions to come to northern Tenerife.

Dozens of experienced local firefighters, police and mountain rangers are leading the search.

Authorities had hoped the operation would be a “massive search” but less than 12 members of the public had arrived at the meeting point before it began.

The 19-year-old has not been heard from since the morning of 17 June, after he told a friend he was lost in the mountains and had 1% battery on his phone.

My daughter lives in Spain, where she runs her own successful business. She has told me how angry the Spanish people are because of the constant insulting comments on their Police and search teams, made by the young man's family and friends. That might well account for the lack of volunteers.
The Spanish people know all about his crimes and how he spent his time in Tenerife. I don't blame them, as I found their statements extremely insulting and a kick in the teeth to those who are working so hard. Perhaps some of the Go-fund-me money should be donated to an appropriate Spanish charity, instead of paying for accommodation & food for the friends brought over for a free holiday

I'd have a little respect for the mum if she'd spent some GFM money on hiking boots etc for the teens she's flown out there. They dont have to go out alone but join with the experienced searchers. But no, they rock up in shorts n flipflops. Great way to avoid actually helping.

Bad friendships, beating an innocent man with his friends, consumption of substances of all kinds, he goes 40 km from his apartment with two strangers and then tries to walk back (10 hours of travel), an expensive watch that disappears, what could go wrong?
