Moving up in the world Dave, congratulations. Hard work really does pay off.

@CampKohler I believe I have to arrange my own ADSL line and modem, I doubt the building has any shared plan. Don't know about potential speeds/capability yet, but the building is only 8 years old and in new area where they put lots of telecoms fibre infrastructure, so should be pretty good.

The emergency lighting control may be to provide 240VAC for one or more flourescent fixtures in case the power fails. If so, check to see how long it runs if you kill the power and get the landlord to replace a dead/weak batt (unless you have already signed one of those rotten contracts making you responsible for ALL maintenance). Usually exit signs have the backup batt. built in, with no circuitry needed if all-LED.

@CampKohler Yeah, the wife is demanding more space in the house, and everything is very cramped as it is, so not much choice but to move the lab out. No pointing just throwing stuff out, because crap will just expand to fill the space again! A bit of a risk financially and work-flow / lifestyle wise, but nothing ventured, nothing gained...

@xjet A lot. Unfortunately I don't have an option left on my own property to gain additional space.

Can't wait to see how you set it up! Maybe a series of quick blogs as you make decisions about stuff!

@ClawSpike I already have 3 x 900mm wide whiteboards, and will consider bigger ones once I get in there and figure it all out (e.g. wall mounted vs stand movable vs electronics etc)

@GeorgeGraves The bldg. entrance is controlled, but that glass makes me nervous, too. Iron fence attached to the walls in front of the glass is cheap insurance and will be effective long before the cops arrive. Alternatively build a wall in front of the glass, which, besides adding security, can be used to mount light cabinetry and the like if it can be fastened to the ceiling and sides. The wall doesn't even have to be finished if covered with foam for that audio studio look.

@GeorgeGraves Yeah, I'd like to set up some permanent cameras etc to make streaming and video capture far easier and spontaneous than it is now. So might very well lead to just more random content, like the "RAW" video I did the other month.

@TheEPROM9 Yeah, the idea would be to have maybe 5-6 separate benches for various stuff. The office cubicle I think I will use an an actual office / recording studio / video editing room.

very nice place indeed, now install a some kind of remote monitoring system, since you already have wiring for it

Nice Dave. A blank canvas nearly.
Get that nasty carpet replaced, don't want little Sagan crawling around on that old one.

If you have to get 'Net svc on your own, you might see if a nearby neighbor has a fast connection that they would be willing to share in return for helping pay their ISP bill. All it would cost is a little switch if they don't already have an extra port available. (I wouldn't mention the streaming video TV shows in your sales pitch. :-))

Make sure to install a large white board so you can teach us more electronic stuff!

Anyone watching in 2018 for the new lab/old lab nostalgia?

Awesome place Dave!! Lot of potencial coolness. Maybe you can make use of the existing alarm wiring and install some web cameras for live streaming or something like that. Anyhow, can't wait to see you turning it into the new EEVblog lab!! Congrats!!

@2020fourier In effect subletting to others would require another person to be on hand whenever the space is open and Dave couldn't be there to keep an eye on things. It might even require special permits because of the increased occupancy. Anything like a public assembly is the most restrictive occupancy, because of fire and safety. In other words, things could get messy, beauracracywise. Of course you could always keep quietly under the radar and then apologetically stop if you get caught.

@EEVblog Instead of a very expensive electronic whiteboard, why not mount a fixed camera zeroed in on an ordinary whiteboard? With a floor switch you can select the scene camera or the whiteboard camera at will ("Foot Director"?) A floor button could be used to direct the camera and a PC to make screen shots (stills) that could be posted/distributed later, allowing you to erase and continue drawing without missing a beat ("Dave-O-Vision"?).

@ivaneduardo747 No, a different one, just across the road. About another 2 minute walk. But I do have to go up a lift with this one.
