“Army people are built differently. People think we are serious beings but honestly, we are filled with humor that, of course, emerges from a dark place.
Like, whenever we are posted at remote places, due to lack of transportation, the food that often comes to us is 3-4 days old. But ‘fresh’ is the word we army personnels use to describe such ration to make ourselves feel better. You see, it’s all about the mindset that makes or breaks the situation.
And I learnt this very early in my life. I was 8 when Dad lost his job. For days, we went without a proper meal. Sometimes, nani’s house would be an escape; whenever I visited her, life felt a little easy. They were a little well-to-do, the days were filled with food and freedom. I’d wonder why things weren’t easy back home. That’s why at 12, I decided to run away from home. And I did. But before I could go anywhere, a good samaritan recognized me and dropped me home. And that incident made me realize that it takes a man to look eye-to-eye to his monsters and still stand.
And that’s what I have been doing all these years. At 25, I was commissioned in the 7th Battalion of the Dogra Regiment and deployed near LOC for the Kargil War. The war rose high on my spirits. I was commanding the post at Akhnoor sector. It was then that while fighting, a bomb exploded just a meter away from me. It was a blank for me after that. And days later when I regained consciousness, I learnt that I was rescued by my fellow soldiers. They’d taken me to the hospital, but the doctor had declared me dead; that’s how lifeless I was.
But while I was revived and brought back to life, my right leg was amputated. I also suffered high frequency hearing loss, a part of my intestine was removed, along with a few other brutal injuries. My life felt like it had come to a halt.
But as I said, at the end of the day it all melts down to your mindset and your attitude. Being in the army, I was conditioned to not give up till my very last breath. And then, holding my one leg I thought to myself, ‘What is one thing a person without a leg would be afraid to do? Maybe a marathon.’ So I started preparing myself for that. I would get up early in the morning and jog for hours. People around me asked me to rest it out. But despite all the soreness, pain, and sprains, I kept going. And it was all worth it when I ran my 1st marathon in 2009- It was liberating. I have now completed more than 26 marathons to date. I also tried skydiving with the same grit and succeeded.
In all these years, I’ve not taken my disability as a disadvantage because that is what has pushed me forward! Today, if you ask me what's the best thing to happen to me- I would say getting injured. Because all of my accomplishments happened due to that. Had I not lost a leg, India wouldn't have got its first blade runner! #ArmyDay
