The schrader valve you’re manipulating to bleed that extra “air” is actually not air at all, it’s the propane vapor escaping allowing for more LIQUID propane to fill the tank. That schrader valve is meant to give way in the event of the tank becoming over pressurized as the liquid propane contents heat up and expand inside the tank. Filling them “full” by manipulating that safety valve is asking for more trouble than it’s worth. Can it be done? Is it relatively safe? Well, yes potentially. BUT, manipulating that safety valve is asking for trouble. This could potentially cause it to malfunction and not perform as designed in the event the tank over pressurizes. Personally I’d much rather fill them normally, even if I’m only getting them 50-60% full. These little tanks last for upwards of 2 hours under continuous use when new. Obviously it will depend on what you’re using the tank for at the time, but even with a half full tank you’re getting at LEAST half an hour of use at full blast regardless if you’re using a torch or camp stove. Purchase 2-3 of the 1# tanks and when it comes time to refill them you’ll get 1.5 hours of run time and not risk a failure on something so potentially dangerous.

I am in no way attempting to tell strangers on the internet that they are required to do this “my way”, I’m simply stating that while this absolutely will work the way the uploader shows, the risk to reward ratio is simply not worth the risk of tampering with this sort of safety device. Regardless of whichever way you refill your tanks, just be safe and remember just because you can, doesn’t always mean you should.

I refill mine all the time I’ve never had to bleed off pressure. And they fill right back up to 1lb of gas and 1lb for the container. Why the need to de pressurize?

That should weigh about 29 oz full, 13oz empty

Never use the shader valve to vent. Use the main valve to vent the gas.

My opinion:
DANGEROUS DANGEROUS DANGEROUS! There is a reason why they DON'T fill ANY tanks 100%! There need to be room for the fumes to burn is why they do 85%. The relief is a SAFETY that you are playing with! 💥💣 ☠

P.S. A SAFE way of getting more propane in a tank is to freeze it for about two hours. Weight your bottle before and after.

Guys, there is a thing called a PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE. That means THE TANK WILL NOT EXPLODE when it gets hot. ALL modern tanks are LEGALLY REQUIRED to have them. Unless your tank was manufactured in 1935, it is safe. Stop trying to scare people into wasting money.

You absolutely 100 percent correct about this and this exactly why many ppl can never full them fully. Essentially this is the same as a purge valve on a regular butane lighter, you have to release the atmospheric pressure out before you fill it. Good job pointing this out, most ppl don't know about this

I fill propane bottles (20lbs) almost daily and this makes more sense than taking 1lbs bottles off to bleed several times.

I fill over 160 a year. Cost me approximately .74 cents. I dont bleed as im filling. I unscrew and press in with an allen wrench with about 4-5 plunges. Weighs 28-29 ounces total.

Don't just put it on its side; go upside down completely, then you know for sure it's getting liquid propane. Also 80% fill, its not because everyone's trying jip you, it's so when the temp go up the bottle doesnt explode.

They're called 1 pound tanks becsuse They're only rated to hold 1 pound of propane. They're not supposed to be 100% full

use a piece of fishing line to open the pressure relief

I’m not usually a Karen, but this is very unsafe. So much wrong here. This honestly can get someone hurt or worse.

There is another way with no bleeding. Connect to upside down tank. Have a container, like a 5 qt ice cream pail. Put water with ice cubes, cold water, put this around small bottle. The difference in temp will cause liquid propane to flow into the small bottle. Takes about 5 minutes, no leakage and no damage to small relief valve. I Do it whenever I need a small bottle filled. It's physics.

Man, according to these comments me and of my neighbors and high school friends and uncles and cousins and coworkers should all be dead from explosions by now.

There’s no need to let that much out you’re letting out more than a pound of air lol
