I tried the similar way to avoid telling my salary expectation at the early stage, and the HR guy told me this is NOT how it works....!!! (meaning applicants should provide their salary expectations.)

Damnit i should have said that works for me. So i got asked this question by the recruiter..so i asked them whats the range they said higher than what i was expecting....than i revealed what i was expecting...and he laughed it off and said something that i couldn't remember but I'm wondering if I should have revealed... it's like a game of poker and you try to bluff the guy holding pocket aces and you have a seven and a 2 in your hand.

What I find annoying are some employers who are looking to pay at the lower range of the payscale but are not upfront with what they are willing to pay.

What happens when the role you are looking for ranges from $75k-$150k and there is zero clarity due to inflation? I can’t negotiate when the range is that big.
