Must Haves for any Guitar Player:

Are you a beginner guitar player? Learn how to play a G major open chord with the step-by-step instructions in this video tutorial. G major can be played many ways; we'll show you the two easiest.

So how about G major? G major can be played several different ways. The easiest way to play it is you're going to put your 1st finger on the 5th string, 2nd fret; then your 2nd finger on the 6th string, 3rd fret; and then your 3rd finger is going to go on the 1st string, 3rd fret. And you can strum all the strings - G major. Now, you might see some folks do the same exact notes but without their first fingers. So what does that mean? I'm going to play my 2nd finger on the 5th string, 2nd fret; and then my 3rd finger's going to go on the 6th string, 3rd fret; and then my pinky - if you can - get it all the way down there to the 1st string, 3rd fret. So some good uses for this because I can change from this chord to C or F pretty quickly if I keep it like this. If I do it the first way, I have to finagle a little bit to get it there. So there's still one more way to play G. You can play it with all 4 fingers. And how you do that is you use your 1st finger on the 5th string, 2nd fret; then you're going to use your 2nd finger on the 6th string, 3rd fret; and then here I'm going to put my ring finger, my 3rd finger, on 2nd string, 3rd fret; and then my pinky is going to go all the way down to the 1st string, 3rd fret. So I'm using all 4 fingers - that can be difficult at first. It's got a nice sound, though - that's G. Here's a little bit of difference: here's the first way I showed you, and here's the second way. Both G, a little bit different, but the easiest way is the first way I showed you - G.

I usually play the G major cord the third way. With all four fingers. Once u get it down, it's real easy to transition to. It also comes in handy when your playing rocky top.

@wuthrich7 the E A D G B E is the strings name x so the 6th string is E the 5th is A, 4th D, 3rd G, 2nd B and 1st string is E. Also the numbers are your fingers so your pinky finger is 4, ring finger 3, middle finger 2 ect...
also the lines are what fret and string the number(ur fingers) go on.
Hope this helpsxx

@InsanePickle007 actually, your finger tips need to harden some more.. so if you keep practising (i know tips would hurt but it's part of the process) your skin would soon develop a callous and the tip would touch only the string it's meant to from then on..

Thank you for showing these 3 ways. I am just picking up guitar again, but several years ago I learned a Gmajor chord the "second" way you show, (using my middle, ring, and pinkie fingers) and it seems most natural for my hand. I also notice, like you said, how it is quicker and easier for me to change to C or F chords without having to look at my hand so much.

I was looking for this, because I'm starting some new lessons and the teacher is advocating the "third" way for Gmajor and I don't like the feel of it (but it has a nice sound). I will check out more of your videos.

I am also wondering about Eminor - I previously learned to play it with my middle and ring fingers, since it is like an Emajor then I just lift off the 1st finger. The instruction wants me to use my 1st and 2nd fingers for the Eminor chord. Thank you.

@SuperSushii123 it is a higher note of G, just do barre G then move it exactly the same to next fret and its G#
