You mentioned the RRS pushing $150-175.  The RRS tabletop tripod with the BH25 head and the L bracket for my camera (5D3) costs $403 plus shipping.  

With the L plate you can shoot vertical and the RRS legs are adjustable allowing more usability.

a dslr with a vari-angle LCD makes low level work much easier.
