He lived in what is now known as Indian Echo Caverns! I’ve been in there and you can see the ledge he slept on at night, complete with smoke marks on the cave ceiling.

I grew up right up the road in stoney brook area I never heard of this. I do know about the 7 gates of hell off of druck Valley rd. I now live near raymyers hollow. Such cool history in york county

Pa has some really great myths and history. I was born and raised in York and we spent a lot of summers driving around finding these places.

I live right across the river from hellam. The whole area around here has crazy history. You should check out the marietta caverns.

I'll bet he found a cave and just built himself a campsite just like it sounds. Why not if you can I knew several old timers in Cumberland and dauphin counties that had stories of runaways and hermits, sometimes one or the other themselves. It was pretty wild in areas like that as you can see.

I grew up in York PA (parents) and Wrightsville PA Grandparents, Hellam (at least the narrator pronounced it correctly once but then he said it wrong Hal-lem) is directly between them. I never heard of this man Joel Strong. I do know that if you drive through Hellam follow the speed limit, the cops there are very quick to grab people driving 1 mile over the speed limit, even though it's illegal.
