The sad part for any hopes of future disarmament is that this whole situation is going to serve as the first example of why no nuclear capable country will ever again voluntarily give up its weapons.

Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons for security assurance, which did nothing in term of actual security, and all the fear of ‘further escalation' is also a major black eye to nuclear non proliferation, it's fortunate that Russia is not winning, and Russia MUST lose, because i see a whole lot more states developing nuclear weapons if Russia is allowed to just roll over Ukraine for the reason of: "they got nukes", large number of countries adapting MAD strategy is gonna be a mad future for all of us

This is a tragic case study for why nukes are a pandora's box which we may never be able to close ever again. Any country remotely considering giving them up now has a good reason to keep them. We live in hell, on earth.

And this is the reason why no one will give up nuclear weapons ever again.
Nobody stepped up to their end of the agreement and Russia would not have taken Crimea or invaded if they had nukes. North Korea, Iran or anybody else will never give up a program and this is the lesson why.

Doing "the right thing at the time" will always be opportunistically attacked in hindsight. I remember the Soviet collapse and the state of Ukraine's government "at the time". The possibilities/warnings of black market auctions of Russian-made fissile materials by rogue separatists were not naive or just hyperbole.

Simply put, stay strapped or get clapped on a national level.

Before the anticipated changeover to a majority-elected African National Congress–led government in the 1990s, the South African government dismantled all of its nuclear weapons, the first state in the world which voluntarily gave up all nuclear arms it had developed itself.

I find it very very difficult to actually call Pakistan a valued ally of the United States, when they spent years harboring Osama bin Laden.

The Budapest Memorandum, by itself, obliges America to give much stronger support to Ukraine. Not just enough that we hope Ukraine can hold out. But enough for Ukraine to retake all the lands stolen from Ukraine since this Memorandum is signed.
We fear the Russians becoming 'crazy' and using nuclear weapons if they lose. Which is a highly unlikely fear.
A much more likely fear, is that over the coming decades, other nations will decide they must obtain nuclear weapons. Pakistan and North Korea have shown that this can be done. In the long term, we will be in much greater danger if we don't start giving full support for Ukraine.
If we don't want nuclear proliferation than we need to start giving Ukraine maximum support now.

They trusted Russia would respect their territory.
Which they don't

Ukraine could have gone Israel way: “I cannot confirm nor deny that we have nuclear weapons yet but we won’t sign any limiting treaty to put our own security and future national existence at risk, thank you”

Excellent write up on this timely question that casual observers need to hear. Dispatched with the immediately obvious then went much deeper. Well done!

You forgot to mention why the US went back on the Iran deal...Iran wasn't complying with inspectors. Kind of an important part.

Moral of the story: Do not give up your nukes if you care about your sovereignty, or have nukes in the first place.

Fun fact - The US have never invaded a nuclear equipped country.
(Thus North Korea and China are able to do as they please)

And the lesson of this story is to not rely on others for your critical needs- security, food, energy, resources. Nations don't have friends, they have interests. Europe and Ukraine are learning this lesson. The US gets to learn this lesson soon when things eventually go sideways with China and all those cargo containers suddenly stop coming one fine day.
