A brief history of modern Ukraine - BBC News

When the Soviet Union collapsed in the 1990s Ukraine was one of the largest new nations to emerge. It held its first elections in 1991.

Bordered by Russia on the east and by Hungary, Poland and Slovakia on the west, politics in Ukraine have always been divided along those looking east towards Russia and those looking to the West.

Putin has said that Ukraine is “ancient Russian soil” but the majority of Ukrainians don’t feel this way, with 68% of Ukrainians in favour of joining the EU.

When history starts in 1991, you know these reporters are flawed.

Interestingly, didn’t Hitler say that Austrians and Germans were one people and that they used to all be a part of a single unit historically just before he annexed Austria in 1938? If my history classes serve me right, back then, the world also condemned the actions and watched the events unfold. We never learn from the past.

Why reporter is saying Ukrainian nation emerged from the Soviet Union, when Kiev the capital was established more than 1000 years ago, Ukrainian nation has long history!

If you decide to watch this video for informational purposes, please take into consideration the following:

- it is incorrect to say that politics in Ukraine is divided into solely pro-russian and pro-European sides. We have multiple political parties that are able to take part in the elections, it is not a two-party system;
- 68% of the population supporting Ukraine's joining the EU does not presuppose that the remaining 32% support close political and diplomatic relations with russia. Many people nowadays are of the opinion that Ukraine should remain on its own and not join any unions;
- saying that Ukrainian nation emerged after the collapse of the USSR is a blatant disrespect towards our historical heritage and the display of plain ignorance on the part of the presenter. The USSR was never a homogeneous creation despite all the efforts to make it look so, and a part of Ukrainians always harboured the hope to get back the country's independence that it was brutally robbed of when russia once again decided it had the right to decide for somebody else. The Ukrainian culture, language, and history were born a long time ago and have been evolving for many years, and so what you call a nation was neither created during the soviet times nor after them.

This topic is difficult to comprehend for those who don't know much about the history of this side of the globe. To get a better understanding of it, think of Ukraine as a country that has been oppressed by colonizers for a very long time. Most of the time the worst colonizer was russia in all its forms, be it the russian empire, the USSR, or the russian federation. Nevertheless, it doesn't mean that previously there wasn't any Ukrainian nation. On the contrary, our cultural identity was shaped by all the tragedies and unfairness that we had to endure, so thinking that we are a young nation is an incredibly foolish thing to do. Don't make this mistake, don't be like putin.

They weren't pro Russian rebels in the east - they were Russian army with drafted locals. There's a difference.

While the modern Ukrainian state appeared in 1991 dropping all the history before that seems misleading. It's the same as to consider that Germany started in 1989.

I'm from Ukraine and just came here to say, that our people are disappointed in NATO, Biden and whole Europe. They were talking so loud about this war and that Russia will pay for this, but reality is opposite: my relatives are suffering from rockets(based on their words on phone call) and whole words actually aren't doing anything specifically to solve this problem. Just some sanctions against Russia which doesn't affect them at all. The president was right about this line : "how you'll defend yourself if your help to Ukraine is so slow?(words which refer to other countries of Europe and US.) I also apologize for probable mistakes in my English as it's 4th language I know. I must clarify one thing : I don't hate any person of Europe or US, I'm just talking about the leaders of these countries and Europe parliament. Thanks for your attention!

Only the other year the BBC was claiming that Ukraine was a nation of racists.

My 6th grade teacher in 1965 was Ukrainian. She hated the Soviet Union: much of her family perished in the Holodomor. She strongly claimed that Ukraine is not Russia. She could definitely beat-up Putin.

It's not whole history. Journalists should add the centuries they show.

I figured that a video on the history of modern Ukraine might go back the last 5 centuries or so, to give context to the Russian relationship, but this only goes back 5 minutes, how is that history?

"pro russian rebels" were russian troops, both in Crimea and Donetsk/Luhansk.

*Russia 🇷🇺 doesn't want war but it already took Crimea from Ukraine. Now Russia 🇷🇺 deploys massive troops and refuse to de-escalate by showing aggression invading Ukraine. Russia 🇷🇺 is absolutely doing the opposite of what it says. Love and support to Ukraine* 🇺🇦

Where is the USA, UK and France who signed and guaranteed the Budapest Memorandum to protect Ukraine’s sovereignty. This is a legal document and you have obligations to meet! Ukraine gave up its nuclear arms to Russia as per this agreement in exchange for sovereignty. THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH NATO! PLEASE HELP UKRAINE!

0:05 I see no new nations. I see the reemergence of a number of nations conquered by the soviet union between world war 1 and world war 2.
