Shorts views are not fair but 1000 subscribers and 4000 watch hours is. Getting monetized was an incredibly difficult thing to do. I have a PhD in history, the niche of my channel, and getting my channel to reach the monetization requirements was one of the most difficult things I've done. It took lots of research and trial and error to reach that goal. The PhD gave me the skills, like research, determination, and understanding the field itself, to make my channel monetized. I had to unlearn lots too. It was a real education reaching my monetization goal.

Rob, Good video telling about the creator's mindset and problems in this long hard journey...I am not giving up....3060+ videos published, 2470 public watch hours out of 4000 required, 2460 subscribers and getting about 300K Shorts views for a 90days period. Game on.

I'm in agreement with sharing the profits from ads YouTube decides to put on smaller channels too. It is the number one complaint I hear from the creator community I'm connected with. People are feeling used, and some have just had it, moving to other platforms that better serve them.

I think one of the biggest issues that youtube needs to fix is all the false claims of reuse. there is a bug causing them and there is alot getting this re use thing now . most are not getting help to fix this either and being turned down in the appeal process

I don’t agree with 59%. Monetization existed for over 1-1/2 decades now and til 2017 there weren’t any requirements to apply. I also think that I shouldn’t have started YouTube in the first place, because I make english videos even though I’m originally German and wasted 5 years for nothing, just made videos and gained NOTHING in return. I finally decided to quit YouTube forever and focus on useful things instead. Now I’m in the process to pull all my Content of the Platform, becoming a YouTuber means nothing. But thank you @vidIQ for trying to help us small creator to grow on YouTube, even though it didn’t work for me. Take care 👋

I think 1000 Subs and 4000 hours are fair. It teaches you what you need to grow.. My biggest concern is that if that goal is reached, YouTube should not say NO sorry we are not monetizing your channel and I heard that they have done it before to quite a few people. So if you want us to work our assess off to reach the Goal then keep your word and reward us with it when we do.. Thats FAIR !

I personally have no issues with the 1, 000 subs and 4, 000 hrs. I started in Feb 2020 and hit the goal in June 2022. It was a slog but it was very rewarding. I have 2 other channels that are at the midway point for those requirements. It takes work and doesn't come overnight. It's like starting my own business and I see how it continues to grow.

VidIQ took me all the way from 40 subs to 1.07K! Thank you so much!

Great video. I remember struggling with getting consistent views to my other channel (not this one of course). Some days people would watch my videos and some days I couldn't make it to 30-ish views in total. Thankfully I found out about famester which pretty much normalized the situation and I was in charge of my views for the first time (it's really a good feeling). Before finding this method, I thought I would have never get monetized.

Are they fair? Probably (minus the ludicrous Shorts requirement), but I still think there should be a secondary monetization tier for channels that meet 1 of the 2 requirements. Let's say 50% of the normal pay scale. It would encourage creators who are almost there to become better while still rewarding them for the work they've already put into their channel.

i stopped worrying about monetization a long time ago cuz it IS unfair.
that being said...
just like they unlocked the community tab for us all, they should unlock the ability to sell merch on youtube (merch shelf) at say...200 subs or just for free. cuz I don't see the harm in doing this...
for example... I have a couple of POD sites that I sell things on and I cant market properly by myself..i think it would hep me if i could show it on youtube!
(by the way I am not trying to self-promote, just shedding light on a potential channel growth problem)

I see it a bit like building a company to a profit, the average small business will take around three years until they are in profit. Getting to 4000 watch hours and 1000 subs is a goal that requires work and slowly improving your channel/business to a point where you're in profit. Some people achieve this in a quicker time just like some businesses get into the profit margin in a lot faster time then the majority. They just happen to produce the right content in the right niche at the right time sprinkled with a good dollop of luck. The majority will slowly and surely work they're way up to it.

I'd have less issue if YouTube didn't run ads on channels who haven't hit the requirements. If it's good enough to run ads on, it's good enough to pay the creators.

The thing with youtube requirements is that, it really does filter creators. It is indeed hardwork getting that milestone. The only problem is, even if you get the said requirements they can still reject you and all the time and effort doing all the work would go to waste. I don't think that's fair!

I think yes and no, I agree with the concept of the requirements however I happen to know several channels local to us who record poor and I mean POOR content including quality and editing and have almost 800 subscribers as they want to get monetised. I think these slip through YouTube’s *net* so to speak and those of us who are trying and also enjoy making content get left behind … it’s a cruel hard job trying to get to 1000😢

10 months in, about half way there. Now, I truly have a HUGE amount of respect for content creators and know how much WORK, TIME, and DEDICATION that goes into hitting this milestone.

The requirements are definitely Not fair. Fact of the matter is that my videos gets ads put on them from 100 views which I see no part off. Their monetization requirements are just there so that they can squeeze as much free money from un-monetized creators as they possibly can.

Let's not kid ourselves and say it's for quality control etc. Because if that was the case, no channels under the requirements would have ads put onto their videos.

After how long can we apply again if our monetization request is rejected ?
