I started my Betta with a 20 gallon. I think it was too much, he wasn't moving around much and hiding. He got put him in a 5 gallon temporarily. He's in an 8 gallon now and he's really happy there!

Started with only my Betta in a 20 high while I got all the plants and stuff to get it planted. He used every inch of it. Once I got it planted and was happy with it, I moved him to a 5 gallon that he still did quite well in, and I stocked the 20 with Harlequin Rasboras, Otos, and Ramshorn snails. After a month and a half of getting them established, I reintroduced the betta. Now he helps a little bit with keeping the snail population down eating the odd baby snail, and has all the room in the world. Then I planted the 5 gallon tank, and got another betta.

Thanks for sharing your insight. People need to know that Bettas “need” more room than a cup or a jar! 👍

Mine lives in a heavily planted, 20g long with low light & low flow. He developed fin rot when living in a community 20 long and since moving a few months ago, has bounced back and is more active than ever.

I've had my betta in a 5 gallon gor almost a year. The heat is 78.8 and he has a filter. He was a tiny little red betta in a cup and almost a year later he is red with some blue fins now. He also flares at me when I go to his tank to feed him. I recommend a 5 gallon. That's my best results!

I upgraded my betta from a 2.5g cookie jar to a 14g rimless cube. He definitely got shy in all that apace for a week or so but has recovered nicely now. I got him three pygmy corys and a clown pleco clean up crew and will try some mid-swimmers in a couple weeks so I don't overwhelm the cycle too much.

Thank you 😊 I got a 22 gallon community tank with one female betta, one 11 gallon tank with a male betta and 5 corydoras and a 5 gallon with a male betta. All my tanks have natural sand and real plants, heater and filter. I have only been in this hobby for slightly over a year.

Had my betta in a 215 litre or 57 gallon aquarium and he absolutely loved exploring it. I strongly believe the bigger the better. He did well with kuhli loaches, Corydoras (cories) catfish. I would never have a betta in a tank smaller than 40L (10gallons).

I like the 10 gallon tanks for my bettas. Just seems more "right" to me. So much more to do with scaping and rearranging, keep them exploring almost endlessly

I moved my betta from a 2 gallon maintenance nightmare to a nicely planted 10 gallon. He has some invert buddies (Amanos and 2 mystery snails). Betta gets hand fed so I know exactly how much he gets to eat. Amanos have caught on to this routine and they come up for handouts as well. My husband just shakes his head. Food is a powerful motivator for just about any critter!

I have a couple of Bettas, one in a 3 gallon cube. I needed to use his tank for a temporary placement, so I put him in a 16 bow front with rasboras. He was pitifully miserable, hiding behind the filter. When he went back to his house, he was very happy swimming about again. He is an introverted pacifist that definitely likes the smaller house. His happiness is all that matters.

Started my dude in a 5 gal, he seemed alright but it was even too restrictive for me to enjoy having my hands in it. He's in a 10g now and seems to love derping around, investigating the plants, on the prowl for his shrimp roommates...

You are right - depends on betta vs size of tank. I've had some bettas in 5 or 10 gallon tanks who had to be moved to something small before they felt comfortable. Once they did, then they really came alive. Hygger offers a really nice 4 gal tank with a flip open lid and great full spectrum light with different color and intensity settings - also has a filter and built in thermometer with nice bright LED readout on top of the lid. It's a reasonably priced package and works great for betta fish. Filter is a little strong, but you can modify reduce flow, or just use a different filter. The betta fish in the ones I have really like these, and the tanks are taller than longer so more plant choices... :)

My view on 2.5 gallon tanks is that once you put your scape in it you lose so much water volume that it quickly becomes a 1.8 gallon or less aquarium. You lose water just putting in the filter or heater. In a bigger tank it isn't quite as bad but in those super small ones everything entering the tank takes away a huge chuck from that water volume. You just don't get any wiggle room.

The first thing you need to mention is that bettas are not a table decoration. They are one of the most abused fish out there. I used to bread them but I couldn’t justify putting all those lives into the hands of careless people. I never keep a betta in less then 10 gl. Lots of wood and plants. I use dirtied tanks. About 5 to 7 small Corys. I will also grow out at least 6 higher end plecos and ten small tetras. This balanced the tank and cleanings are ones every 6 weeks just to vacuum the sand. Water quality stays stable. But I’ve been at it over 40 years now took some time to figure it out.
