You add both speeds 72 + 28 =100 since both trains travel towards each other. So, it is as if one train
travels at 100 mph
. So since the distance is 1500 miles, then it would take
1500 mile / 100 miles per hour = 15 hours Answer
Proof 15 miles x 72 = 1080, the distance the fastest train covered
and 15 miles x 28 = 420, the distance the slowest train covered
total 1500 miles
So the fastest train covered 1080 miles, while the slowest covered 420 miles.

Another method: Since one speed is 72 mph and the other is 28 mph, divide the fastest speed by
the slowest 72/28 = 2.571428. Hence one is traveling 2.5714 times the speed of the other.
Hence together, it is 3.571428 ( 1+ 2.571428). So if the slowest is n the fastest in 2.25714 28n

Hence 1500 miles / 3.5714 28 will give the distance the SLOWEST train covered= 420 miles; hence
the other 1080 (1500 - 420)
Since the slowest train traveled at 28 mph, it took 15 hours (420/28) to meet the other.
Since both trains traveled for the same amount of hours, there is no need to calculate the time of the other train as 420/28 = 1080/72
