It can be solved using 1 variable.
At PRESENT: Let X be the son’s age and 3X for the father’s age since it says he is 3 times as old as his son.
Under PAST column: We just rewrite their ages and add negative five (-5) since it says “Five years ago” therefore the new ages are: for son it’s X-5 and for the father it’s 3X-5.

Finding the VALUE of X:
It says there that 5 years ago the father’s age is 4 times as old as his son. Since we already have generated son’s age and that is X-5, we just simply use this to generate other Father’s age 5 years ago and that is 4(X-5).

To solve for the Value of X:
4(X-5) = 3X-5
4X-20 = 3X- 5
4X-3X = -5+20
X = 15 (the son’s age)

3X : substitute 15 for X
3(15) = 45 (father’s age).
