Solving Word Problems Using Algebra

This video shows how to solve 2 different word problems by setting up Algebraic equations. The second example requires setting up a a system of equations to solve. The problems involve distance and time(speed).

This is the way algebra should be taught in school. So many people, including myself struggle, to see how algebra applies to real world situations. This was difficult but helpful. In problem 2 you did what I did. Plugged the 3 in for y in the more complex equation. After figuring out x that way I realized it was way simpler to plug 3 into the x+y=5 to get 2 for x.
