the television fee is actually based on our constitution. Theres the right for uninfluenced and free information. Therefore the state has to pay channels like ard, zdf, arte, phoenix etc. I think you need to mention that because, i feel like its mostly forgotten that its not just a random idea. Its based on constitution

10:10 We always do it. We learn that already in school. When we have our school subject called "sport" or "sportunterricht" within a "sporthalle". In order to protect the ground we use shoes just for those hours. Unless the "sportunterricht" is outside. Like playing soccer outside.

I still support public television after 46 years in this country and do not consider it a "scam". It can be annoying and not bring the programming you want, but relatively unbiased information is a treasure and worth paying for.

About the shoes: i take off my street shoes and have indoor ones, but would never request from guests to do so when visiting. And of course I am a cat person 🙂

newer trashcans have a ring around them where you can place the bottle in so that they are not standing on the ground or somebody has to reach into the can

So funny that you find the cookie pop-ups annoying. You get the choice to decline all those trackers. How cool is that?

Cookie Tip: the extension “I don’t care about cookies” will auto-close most of those popups. In addition with “Cookie AutoDelete”, that deletes them für each session, you get privacy and a way less annoyance.

In the US we don't have a monthly fee for public television but we do have those telethons to raise money and support by corporations.

I'm definitely a cat person! ;)

The payment for the public broadcast system (Beitragsservice) is not giving any discounts for people with disabilities like being blind or deaf. Before 2013 blind or deaf people for example paid only 50% - my grandma is deaf and we were informed by a deaf association that she has to pay the full price. The deaf association already hired several lawyers and tried to safe the money for the deaf people but the judges didn't help the people. The only reason to don't pay is a really low income below the poverty line.
Even if you are not in Germany for way more then 50% of the year you have to pay the full price because your house or rental flat etc. is still in Germany ...

I like both Cats and Dogs. I grew up with Dogs, some years later when i was a Teenager my uncle rescued a cat and adopted to our family. All my life i was surrounded by one or another. Today i would say it like once Heinz Rühman said: " You can live without dogs, but it´s not worth it!"

There is a great browser extension called "I don't care about cookies", which will get rid of the cookie messages. It is essential.

Thank heavens for public television/radio in Germany! I am glad to pay. US tv is pure torture!!!

Cats!! Dogs are sycophants!
The TV-radio license pays for much more than just the programs themselves. The larger TV-radio companies, for instance, maintain symphony orchestras, most of them of very high quality, and it keeps ticket prices at a (relatively) affordable level. You are also supporting maintenance of internet infrastructure. They also maintain the traffic information service that is broadcast for travelers. This is probably less important today as most people probably use their phones for navigation rather than the navigation systems in their cars, but the service is there.
I have been wearing house shoes for so long at home that the idea of wearing shoes in the house is more than a little odd for me. Slippers or house shoes are also a lot more comfortable! People in southern Germany and Austria in particular often have a number of pairs of slippers in various sizes for their guests.

The older I get, the more unnecessary the "Cat vs Dog" debate becomes to me.

During the holidays, I grew up with my grandparent's dog, visiting them all regularly.
But my mother used to have a friend from work, who we would also visit and she had 2 cats and a bunny.
