You need to know the actual history of breaking. It was never called breakdancing by the people that started it and was dubbed breakdancing by the media. Breakers do not call it breakdancing and competitions do not call it breakdancing. You need to look at the athleticism of breaking. They are judged on moves, how they go from one move to another, how long they hold the move, lines etc. Syncronize swimming, floor routines, figure skating, etc. are very similar in applications. Think about figure skating or a floor routine. The practice very specific moves to music and do it over and over again. In breaking they practice moves, but they are also being judged on how they incorporate those moves to be enhanced by the music, which they don't know what will be. Also, they use their moves to answer the moves from their opponents. So just like in Tae Kwon Do, judo and wrestling, the participants answer and counter moves from their opponents. You need to take "dancing" out of your thought process and look at the technique. Twists, turns, push ups, balancing, holds, height. All things you see in gymnastics and other sports. IMHO

Figure skating and artistic gymnastics sound way too similar to breaking, so if you want to take it out take those too

I didn’t even know that golf was a sport until I was in my 20s.

I was shocked to learn that not only is golf a sport but there are golfers that makes millions of dollars a year and are treated like celebrities.

The point I’m trying to make here is all sports in the Olympics and not in the Olympics are subjective.

Isnt syncronised swimming essentially the same?

Dancing is an art, not a sport. Yes, it involves talent, but is not a sport. Maybe next year we can add dog walking and ironing.

I think that Breakdancing isn't the greatest idea to be in the Olympics, but at least it is athletic and competitive between countries. something like flag football at the LA28 games is much less worthy of being in the games just solely based off of the fact that there aren't many countries that are competitive at American football. There should definitely be a competition criteria added to the games, as I'm sure lots of people wont feel motivated to watch a sport that will always have one clear winner. would be cool to see some more globally competitive sports get some Olympic attention to help them grow (e.g. Underwater hockey, Lacrosse, Ultimate Frisbee, Dragon boat, Muay Thai, etc).

What about figure skating in the winter Olympics that is dancing on ice

Where would you place Rhythmic Gymnastics and Skateboarding, they seem quite subjective to me.

Break dancing can be included IF they actually score the difficulty of the moves the way gymnastics and skateboarding score the difficulty of each move in the routine, or a difficult combination of moves scores a lot more than a combination that's easily done. If break dancing has this sort of scoring structure, then we'd get a lot less of embarrassing competitors like Raygun.

A agree and disagree. Breaking can be an olympic sport(it is an element of gymnastics, after all), but there are other diciplines out there that should be (re)added before it, like tug of war.

The modern olympics were founded in 1896 and startet as event where everybody should be able to participate. A gathering that is about bringing many different people together together and connect them with each other via their passion. We had many crazy contests at the olympics all the time and for me that is part of the fun. Track and Field athlets and other sports communities never got harmed by it.

Been advocating Futsal for years to be a. Olympic Sport, considering the lack of prestige in men’s Football as a glorified u23 tournament.

As of breakdancing, it definitely stems from the culture it originated from and makes it lose its edge.

Dance sports have their own league. I think break dance belongs there. I've watched a lot of dance battles, and the judges often say, whoever carries the atmosphere wins the battle. That is hella subjective. I think cheerleading would be much better option than breaking

Same subjectivity as in gymnastic floor routines

My complaint is there is too many events at the Olympics. At this point they might as well split the Summer Olympics into two events: the competitive events (track & field and swimming etc) have their own Olympics, whilst dance and artistic sports have their own games. Gymnastics, breaking, BMX freestyle, Skateboarding, fencing, dancing and synchronised swimming. I can't keep up with 40% of everything that happened in 2 weeks

Don't worry. After Raygun, breaking, as an Olympic sport, is truly and completely dead.

I don’t think it’s going to last as a “sport”

I love breaking and have been a fan of the whole scene since the early 90s. Although I am glad to see it grow in popularity, my main concern is how subjective the judging can be. I am curious to see how they go about judging the event in the days to come. As for the artistic nature of bboying, Artistic Gymanstics and Artistic Swimming are the names on the Olympic website for Gymnastics and Synchronized swimming respectively. Rhythmic Gymnastics is about as artsy as it gets and I don’t see too many complaining about it be described as entertainment. I would say let’s see how it goes. Lastly, I do agree that there are other sports out there that deserve to be in the Olympics. Hopefully they include those in the future.
