Raspberry Pi iPad Pro Setup Guide (2022)

The April 2022 release of Raspberry Pi OS removed the default password for the default user. Along with this change, Raspberry Pi Imager added a nice image customization wizard. Together these changes make for a slicker, updated installation process when compared to the older Pi OS versions.

Really love your tutorials. You are exceptional. One of my most important intended use cases, whether with my iPad Pro, or my MacBook Pro, is to relay through it for console access on certain pieces of network equipment -- never seem able to reliably do that with the USB C on later Macs. Thank you!

Awesome. Got me up and running on my ipad air by the end of the video. Thanks for creating the tweaked ipad os changes for download! You rock!!

Appreciate you sharing this video and information. Admittedly you crammed massive amounts of important info faster than I could comprehend, Guess I’ll have to watch again & again. I’m not as young as once was ( my white matter in my brain is less @75 years old ) I’ll be baaaka 😅🐌🐌

Would have been great to include the USB config in this video rather than just mentioning the custom images. Will see if I can find it from elsewhere.

For the users who use an earlier verion of pi 4, please try a a USB 2.0 version of Type-C cable

Disappointed. I keep hoping that you will walk through the configuration usb-c for *out-of-the-box* raspberry pi os lite.

It's nice that you provide an image with that already done ... And maybe most people would prefer that. But I want to see all the "magic" and be able to do it myself.

Could you do a short video going through that part for the few of us that want to do our own usb-c configuration?

Thanks! Glad to see you back!

I agree, an end-to-end Raspberry Pi with iPad Pro setup would be great including setting up Blink, setting up Mosh, and how to keep the connection active. You mentioned it before but brushed over the details.
This was a great update, I would have missed the setup options otherwise.

Great update to the video. I know in the previous edition you linked to a page that helped you setup usb-c for use with the pro by hand instead of using the pre-updated images. Any reason you dropped that this time around (e.g. too many questions, out of date instructions, etc.) or just didn’t want to?

For folks who start with the standard variant and opt for XRDP as a remote desktop solution: you need to leave the video group to improve performance back up to previous levels.

thank you very much to provide the patched OS. Out of curiosity I found that your setup just works fine also with my MacBook Air which has 2 USB-C ports. So I do not need to buy a Magic Keyboard and can use an external monitor via USB-C to Displayport and charge the MB at the same time while being connected to the RPI

Does this also work with Raspberry Pi 400?

I was just thinking about this in the morning and your video showed up!! Thank you!

This is amazing - thank you.

One question: how should the Pi get outside Internet? If we are outside our home, do we need to go into raspi-config and set up our WiFi connection wherever we are? Or should Internet come through USB-C?

I was at an airport a few days ago and wasn’t able to pull down a public Git repo while SSH’ed into my Pi. Wasn’t sure if I messed up the configuration. Thanks!

With iPadOS 16 support of external monitor, what set up is possible to charge iPad while powering Raspberry Pi while hooking to 4K external monitor?

is it working through the usb cable or working wirelessly through your wifi network since you used SSH?

Great video, thanks a lot! Also brilliant that you customised it for USB, really saves a lot of fuffing about.

I think I'm missing something.. Is this so that you can use the iPad's screen for your raspberry Pi? If so, is that accomplished by simply plugging in the USB-C cable after configuring it?

Or, is this so that your iPad can communicate with your raspberry Pi? (share data, etc)
