One crucial difference is the sheer size of the oval. It's TWICE the size of an American football field, and Australian football is a basically NON-STOP game that is nothing like the American game that involves endless stops and starts. An American football player simply wouldn't have the stamina required in Australian Rules.

The reason the field is oval is because normally it serves as a cricket field, AFL as a game was originally created to keep cricketers fit back in the winter of 1858.
The oval shaped AFL field is 148-202 yards long and 120-170 yards wide, while the rectangular NFL field is 100 yards long and 53 yards wide.

I emigrated to Australia from the UK back in 1970 and because we lived in the Western Suburbs I automatically chose The Western Bulldogs as my team to barrack for (back then they were named Footscray Bulldogs the town of Footscray was where I lived) also coming from the UK I liked that their colors were red white & blue same as England's colors. I was not a great fan of soccer in the UK but when I saw how exciting and fast paced AFL was I became hooked. Many people think it is made up from a mixture of other games but in truth it has been around for more than 150 years so before most other football games were even thought of, it began as a way for cricket players to keep fit during the cricket off season. Cricket is played during the Summer season and AFL is played during the Winter season. Although AFL is popular all over Aus in New South Wales and Queensland Rugby is more popular...I personally believe that AFL is the BEST football game EVER!

Collingwood supporter here. My gt-gt uncle played in the 1896 grand final for Collingwood, so that’s why.

Root. 😅 This is slang for bonking in Australia. We say we 'barrack' or just 'go' for a team.

"Who do you barrack for?"
"I go for Essendon."

Etc.

Australian rules football started in the 1850s .Some AFL clubs are some of the oldest sporting clubs in the world, still running. Its the biggest sport in Australia by far

I’m an Idahoan who began watching AFL in 2020 and it has become my favorite sport to watch. Forget about the Geelong Cats…..”barrack” for the Collingwood Magpies. I wish more people would discover and follow this sport. Games are played on FS1, FS2 and Fox Soccer Plus. Of course, due to the time difference, you’ll more than likely have to record the games and watch them later. It’s a cracking game….

What makes the game more exciting is that the oval ball has a random bounce which can go anywhere so the players have to be on high alert at all times. Also, a tackle can come from any direction.

Hi Travis and Susie, with Aussie Rules there are distinctions. The national league is the AFL, and each state/territory have their own leagues; on top of that, there are also metropolitan and country leagues. Aussie Rules is the greatest game ever played, and it's unlike anything you have ever seen.

Australian Rules Football is played on an oval shaped(cricket) field, as it was originally invented to keep cricket players fit in the off season; from there, it quickly became a widespread sport loved by millions of fans. It was the top football code in all states and territories, with the exception of Queensland and New South Wales which were predominantly Rugby League territory.

Oh wow. 😮 I discovered your channel recently through music and I am always interested in American people learning about the AFL and Australian Football.

This is going to be cool. 😎

Watching AFL is like watching formula One racing. The other football code in Australia, rugby league is like watching the Quambatook tractor pull.

When you talked about brush burns, I thought about the field in Queenstown, Tasmania. It is a local field, so a lower competition than the AFL. It is called The Gravel because mining a century ago poisoned the local landscape and they couldn't grow grass on the field. It's surface is fine quartz gravel out of the mines. My wife has a former workmate who played there when he was in highschool. He's 60 yet still has scars on his knees. AFL players who started out there are generally good at taking hits and staying on their feet.

And yes there a plenty of scrapes and brushburn in local footy but it is a winter sport so ground is usually soft from rain and the big stadiums have amazing grass and ground staff

Geelong are one of the best teams in the 2000s, had a bad year through injuries last year but are on track for a good year this year, the culture in geelong is very family and community based, our win rate in the 2000s is the highest, plus we are the 2nd oldest professional football based club that is still playing today in the world, (the oldest is melbourne football club from the AFL)
