If all the Earth's land ice melted, sea levels would rise over 200 feet. So what would that mean for the United States' coastlines?

Science Insider tells you all you need to know about science: space, medicine, biotech, physiology, and more.

And I'm just sitting here in the midwest like.... "huh"..

We need to take the coastal cities and push them somewhere else!

You're telling me that if all the ice melted I would have beachfront property?... I have to go start my car.

"Hundreds of millions"? Probably just millions, since the current US population is only 320 million.

"A few millimeters of sea level rise a year" doesn't sound like much, but the average rate of global sea level rise over the past 5 years (16mm/year) is more than 5 times the rate of average sea level rise over the past 20 years (3mm/year). Not only is the rate of rise increasing, the rate of its acceleration is increasing. It won't take as long as most people think to see significant changes.

Someone should be thinking about gathering two of every animal. But you know what thank goodness we already have several real big boats. So that's like half the battle.

So a loss of all of the US major cities and military installations, food shortages, refugee camps, lack of infrastructure, historical buildings is a good thing?

Could you please do a video on what the weather patterns would be like with this new landscape? i.e. where there would be deserts, and new green areas, hurricane paths, and jetstream

This is good news for me. We'll finally have beaches in Vermont! I never thought I'd see the day. :')

I think it is so "cute" that folks actually think this is a good idea because the dislike "hipsters" and they "want waterfront property". Yeah, really cute. Food shortages, people mass migrating, loss of economic stability. It sounds like a "blast" right. I guess ignorance really is bliss.

How about folks living around the great lakes?

If we lose Florida to rising sea levels, that's not a bad thing.

Imagine Yuma, AZ under water. With a 216 ft sea level rise, almost all of it would be. The Gulf of California would extend well up the Colorado River, far north of Yuma, and a bay would extend far up the Gila river.

I live in the southern part of the San Joaquin Valley in California. I think my area has a 400 feet elevation above water, so I'll be safe.
