Boomer here: I had chicken pox in 3rd grade. Had shingles at age 46. First symptom was like foreign body sensation in my left eye. It took a couple days for the rash to appear on my forehead but before the rash I had the FB sensation (walk in docs said it looked like a corneal abrasion), then trigeminal nerve pain (like where the earpiece of your eyeglasses rest) and a nerve pain from my forehead to my scalp, curling around the left crown (I have two, according to a stylist). Then the headache started. Back to the walk in. Ah, they told me they saw dendrites on my L cornea and a rash was forming. They prescribed Famvir and called my ophthalmologist right then. He prescribed meds also. So by the third day my eye was swollen and weepy. The entire L front quadrant of my head was involved. I felt as if I had the flu for two weeks. I have late effects in my L eye and scalp.

Within 10 years I had another bout but it was milder. The night before the rash it felt like pins and needles poking me from the inside. R front torso just beneath the breast. I woke up with a rash and had to call off work. My PCP prescribed Famvir and I missed a week and a half of work (at least it was itchy and somewhat painful but thankfully not like the flu).

There were no vaccines then. I purposely didn't abbreviate a lot of things in case some of it might help another reader to recognize symptoms.

I had chicken pox and in 2023, I had shingles. I didn't know it was shingles and 3 different types of rashes. I was using hand sanitizer for the rashes and shingles. Notified the doctor and even took pictures.

I suffer from purigo modularis. My specialist was going to put me on methotrexate. I had the bloods done, and it showed that I was not immune to chickenpox, so I had to have two vaccinations with my GP.

After about three days following the vaccinations, I developed a tremendous burning pain in my total knee replacement scar, and I didn't know what it was; the consultant told me that it was an activation of shingles I have never felt such pain in my life, I was put on to antiviral medication for 10 days and thankfully the blisters along the full length of my total knee replacement scar have now disappeared although I am left with a little soreness.

So true! Working in the hospital, we never let pregnant staff go into isolation rooms. 
Never had chickenpox, even though my mother made stay in the same room with my cousins (LOL) that had it when I was 10. But definitely it is great advise to get the vaccine -especially when your older!

I got chicken pox when I was 14, which is really late. Shingles runs in the family. I’m 35. Will get vaccinated when I turn 50 if that’s what the protocol is.

Dr. JenCaudle, I had chicken pox when I was a kid and I had shingles in my 30's, I am now in my 40's.
Commercials and scientific literature often mention that you could experience shingles in your 50's on ... how is possible that I had it so young?
Also should I get a vaccine against shingles if I had it at such young age?.
I would mention that in the same year I was diagnosed with graves disease...if it can help for any answer. Thanks!!!

Thank you for this every time I go to WG to p/u a Rx the PharmD see I am over 50 and always ask me at I ready to get the Shingles Vaccine. I had chick pox as a child, Shingles when I was pregnant therefore I turned down the shingles vaccine. Thank you for this answered my question ❤
