In the Mandalorian, we get our first glimpse of the darksaber in live action. Previously it was shown in Star Wars: Rebels and the Clone Wars animated series. What good has come of Mandalorian society by anyone wielding the darksaber? Are there any reasons it should have continued to be a status symbol? I think not…and here is why…

Seriously, thanks so much for doing this! Outside of the movies and The Mandalorian, I know jack squat about the other Star Wars characters. I love how positive you are. I hope you're feeling much better and your family is well.

On the subject of fun topics that always bring on excitement the dark saber shattering is also equally equivalent to the legacy light saber from Anakin shattering in the last Jedi

The Darksaber definitely needed to go. For all the reasons you shared. The saber is nothing but divisive for the Mandalorian people. It made them like the Sith of Old.

Din Djarin didn't want the saber, or to rule Mandalore. He tells Gideon as much when Gideon tells him "whoever wields this blade, has the right to lay claim to the Mandalorian throne." Din literally says, "That's not part of my plan." He even tries to give it to Bo-Katan (who is a qualified leader with experience and who actually, is proficient in combat with the Darksaber) but Gideon continues stir the pot because his whole plan hinges on the Mandalorians being fractured. If the Mandalorian people are locked in constant conflict with one another over the Darksaber and misguided succession rites, then they are not going to be a threat to Gideon's plans or the First Order. Gideon banked on Din wanting the Darksaber as the divine right to rule, but that's not Din's character.

I love Mandalorian S3 because of the transition and character growth of the Mandalorians. They finally wake up (at least for now) and realize the Darksaber is not the end all be all to their leadership and unification. Bo-Katan gets the lion share of this character wise, but it's still dang satisfying to see Mandalore and her people grow.

Excellent! Quite correct! The Darksaber was more a curse than a uniting symbol. It had to be destroyed.

I have mixed emotions about the Darksaber’s destruction. It proved to be more of a divisive symbol than a unifying one for the Mandalorian people justifying the need for them to move past it’s contrived symbolism. However, I’m going to miss it because it’s such a cool saber and had a great creative aspect behind it in both its in-universe story and its out-of-universe genesis. But as long as the crystal exists, something tells me its story is not yet complete.

I was sad to see it go, but let’s be honest, that wicked black blade is practically begging you to do something violent. Even the Sith red lightsabers don’t give off that vibe nearly as powerfully.

Very nice overview. Hmm you made an interesting point about lightsabers not really being passed down as heirlooms but I think the Mandalorians felt they were entitled to the darksaber because of the Beskar materials that made the darksaber which they felt belong to mandalorians exclusively. The story behind the darksaber made it even more important to their history hence leading the the obsession of wielding it but due to the messy exchanges that occurred over the years the story no longer held validity so it was best for it to be destroyed so they could rebuild their society which was already in the brink of extinction!

Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed your "shameless plug" (I hope I typed it correctly, English is not my first language) first time I heard it done this way, I am ok with the dark-saber destruction would be nice to get a series on it's creation and first owner.

So 2 questions. 1st what happened to Obi-Wan's light saber? And what happened to Vader's light saber after Luke cut his hand off.

They should make another dark saber and give it to Grogo.

I wouldn't be shocked if they brought it back

This is a prime example of "Legends" turning history into something it's not.

I'm conflicted about the saber. Watching this video made valid points on why the sword should be destroyed. However, when I followed Anakin's story, it focused on him being a medium in balancing the light and dark all while going through a journey of redemption. Wouldn't the same be done about the dark saber?  It is possible that a redemptive arc could be crafted where a worthy individual rises above the saber's dark legacy, unifying Mandalorians and using its power for good. There have been works of fiction that had cursed weapons that undergone many trials to be redeemed and even become a symbol of hope despite its dark history and bloodshed. Perhaps the dark saber was far too gone to ever be saved, but I cannot help but think of the potential it could've had if given more time.

Oh and it’s also almost quite similar to the ring in lord of the rings series

Do you think the dark saber was like a red sith lightsaber? It did kill a lot of Jedi and that why it was destroyed?
