The SURPRISING reason the Darksaber is so Heavy | Star Wars Explained

A common misconception among even the most hardcore of staar wars fans revolves around the apparent weightlessness of lightsabers. While there is good reason to believe this, I’m here today to talk specifically about the darksaber, and why the characters who wield it seem to have so much trouble.

With the latest episode of the Book of Boba Fett (Chapter 5, The return of the Mandalorian), several characters have commented on and demonstrated the physical weight of the blade. This is the truth behind the rarest Mandalorian Lightsaber of Tarre Vizla

Ironically, the Dark Saber's Jedi origins seem to be so aligned with Mandalorian philosophy in the fact that only the strong and worthy may wield it

It's even more complicated than that. Kyber crystals don't respond to the Force, per se, but the emotional state of the person wielding the blade crafted from them. The more conflicted a wielder of a lightsaber, or in this case the Dark Saber, is, the harder it is to control the blade and the heavier it becomes. The literal weight of the wielder's emotions and internal conflicts are an extension of the blade. It isn't so much about bonding, as a Kyber crystal almost instantly bonds to the wielder, but rather it is about the state of the wielder's mind that is at play. Quite literally anybody can wield a lightsaber or the Dark Saber, even if they're not a Force sensitive. Being a Force sensitive and having training in how to use the Force, however, grants greater clarity of mind and greater concentration. Not unlike the meditative nature of martial arts. A true swordsman, who has trained to wield a sword and to fight in the moment undistracted by intrusive thoughts would have no problems wielding a lightsaber or the Dark Saber. A sword becomes an extension of the swordsman's body, and like a normal sword, a lightsaber or the Dark Saber must also become like an extension of the body to be wielded properly. That is what is meant when the Mandalorian is told "you're fighting against the sword." He's clearly not trained in swordsmanship or how to fence, and his movements aren't leveraging the Dark Saber. Swinging a sword is not like swinging a bat or club, it isn't haphazard, each movement must be precise, must have intent, and must aim to conserve one's energy while making each swing decisive. In fact, it's one of the things I hate about Star Wars lightsaber fighting, the flashiness of the movements. It's cool to look at, but it isn't effective swordsmanship. The best and most realistic fight in all of Star Wars was the fight between Obi Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul in Star Wars Rebels. No flash, no pomp and circumstance, it was quick and decisive.

I find it weird that sith "bond" with their kyber crystals, when they usually steal them and make them bleed. I'd imagine there'd be a constant battle between the two and a pushback from the crystal after what the sith user did to it, but obviously it isn't like that..

I feel that saber energy has a large amount of inertia when the crystal isn't attuned.
There's no additional mass, but it takes effort to move and stop moreso than a raw stick of plasma.
With the help of the Force, it guides the blade. That's why some masters say the Force guides their movements.

🤔I thought that it was because The Mandalorian did not want to accept his position as Ruler (even though i think Boba will be King)🤔

I always pictured that the blade met resistance as moved it moves. Not from interaction with air or atmosphere but from an effect generated by the blade itself. Picture moving underwater, what that resistance feels like

Fighting with a Darksaber must be like trying to make quick moves with a metal broadsword, those suckers are heavy.

I knew Lightsabers have weight!!! Does that mean I’m forced to dislike the video (even though it will never be seen?!!!)

Lore Star videos are great to see, thank you, Dash Star crew.

I suspect resistance might be a more suitable term than talking about weight specifically

Wait...aren't lightsaber blades made of plasma and plasma is weightless... so... the hilt must be the heavy part

I don't care what anyone says it was never that heavy not for Sabine not for Gar Saxon etc Force sensitive or not he is literally dragging it in some scenes like it's drawing energy from him it's never been presented like that.

Don't make excuses for the sequels, please. Those movies were made with no clear plot in mind, while Mando and the rest seem to have something but still I am not convinced.
It still leaves the fact that Pre Vizsla could wield the dark saber with ease, Maule being the exception since he was a force user.
I guess they wanted to heavily emphasize the fact that you need training to use this weapon, but in Mando's case I really saw no reason for him top use it all of a sudden.

Yet Sabine was able to carry it easy with her Mary Sue powers.

On the note of Kylo's crystal: not only was the crystal cracked, but he himself was constantly conflicted between the dark and light which made a true bond basically impossible. Kylo Ren was wasted on the sequels and is probably one of the only parts of the sequels with any depth

For some reason I have a feeling that this is going to end up being the fall of the Mandalorian because he's going to end up being Force sensitive or some shit like that I think that's where they're going with this from the beginning he's never known anything about the Force or what it is it's almost like the same thing they did with Finn and look he was supposed to be Force sensitive even hinted at in the Rise of Skywalker. People need to remember they can make up any can and they want as they go along they do it all the time now you can Force sensitive and not even know it and it can just awaken inside of you or some shit like that... 🤔 Wait a minute kind of like they did with Rey!!! If they do end up doing that it will absolutely ruin the character because that means we can't have not one Star Wars show or a piece of media without a Force sensitive character in it Christ that's why I appreciate the Book of Boba Fett so much because there's no one that's Force sensitive in the show and he's my favorite character but of course it's so refreshing to not have anyone being Force sensitive in a Star Wars show/movie/game or any other media.

So that Corridor Crew video isn't right at all then is it? They didn't know the lore. Sabers will always have some weight depending on the quality of the bond with the force-sensitive wielder.

This video remember me one theory what I read few years ago at some internet forums. Imagine that Lightsabers can be used as we know them only by force sensitive beings, because of force crystals nature. Othewise they will be very dangerous and unstable in hands of nonforce-user. PS: Nonforce sensitive can't even use them without overheating and early switch-off because of it.
