I felt like my forearm was aching just watching! Thanks for explaining the memory effect - that'll be why my 5 year old Bosch lasts about 5 minutes!

Lithium batteries seem to be great, i had a worx drill for about 5 years but it could never do any serious work because the batteries would run out too quickly, i bought a makita with 3.0ah batteries it makes a huge difference having a decent battery.

Supposedly for Li-Ion batteries it's better to not fully cycle them as you were told for NiCd and NiMH.
But a problem with Li-Ion is that they get weaker just with time (like half capacity after two years), no matter how much you use them.

Just a word of caution lads Lithium ion batteries don't mind being left for a few weeks or even months.
I had the older batteries in some older tools and had to have time off due to an accident and the batteries were nackerd and would not take a charge the older batteries need to be discharged and charged regular as clockwork or they are dead as a doornail.

Thanks for that, youve set my mind at ease more!
I can tell you are a good man...so the best of luck to you.

Greetings from Canada. Interesting. 2aH at 18V is 36 watt-hours of stored energy for both batteries, so in theory, they both have the same amount of stored energy provided that it is the usable capacity, if it is taken at the right rate. The test you selected was a high load test for both batteries so the one with the lower internal resistance (less heating of the battery - internal losses) would likely do better. It would be interesting to repeat this test with a new NiCd battery. BTW, I have not seen the the kit you have (Dewalt Branded li-Ion substitute battery and charger) as available in North America. I moved to the Dewalt (so called) 20V system including new brushless tools when my NiCd batteries reached end-of-life. Dewalt has an adapter available here to connect a 20V battery to an 18V tool. Thanks. I have given you a like and subscribed

@ultimatehandiman,

Great demonstration! One humble suggestion, though, for the future:

Apples to apples, mate. If you're starting out with a brand-spanking new LiOn, the you should do the same with the NiCad or NiMH.

You only charge the "old" battery for an hour, presumably because it held charge from previous use. Uh-uh. Unbox all batteries to be tested simultaneously, and test each according th their performance after the FIRST full charge.

Just my $0.02. Great video though!

Would have been a more accurate test if you had changed the hole cutting bit when testing the second battery as after the first 30 holes it would not be as sharp so it would actually put more stress on the battery

Hi,
Thanks for replying.
It was bought new from an ebay tool retailer, and it wasnt cheap.
Its obviously never been used as it looks brand new, but the date thing is a little worrying, as i know they have a relatively limited lifespan anyway.
Im figuring Dewalt have probably stopped making these with the advent of the XR and slide on batteries?

PS...just received cordless dewalt angle grinder in post as we speak!

Try again after the Li-Ion battery has been charged from empty to full at least 5 times. you might see an improvement.

I thought the real benefit of lithium is higher current, so it can drive different kinds of tools that nimh and nicd could never, sush as high torque digital pulsed motors, and the newer tools designed for lithium. I Imagine using them on the old tools wont make a bit of difference.

Hi Ultimate,
Ive just purchased one of these DE9180's online, and ive noticed its got 2010 stamped on it.
Do you think it will be ok?
Ive charged it up for 10 hours and used it once.It didnt last that long with normal drilling, but its hard to tell.
Good vid.

Lithium ion batteries need to be primed before they reach full capacity.
