I'm using the free version of Avira, but this question might apply to any other product that has a complete system scan option. I ran that option on Avira last night, and the process took eleven hours. I have a few logical drives (mapped using the DOS SUBST command during startup), and I suspect that some of my files get scanned multiple times. My question is, are antivirus programs "smart" enough to only scan physical drives and ignore redundant scanning of logical drives? If not, I'll remember to turn off my logical mappings before my next complete system scan.

I tried to ask that question on the Avira community forum last night and got a very rude reply from some rep who was far more interested in upselling than offering an opinion on the technical issue. I was a bit put off when doing a random test of avira free with the EICAR Test to verify virus detection. Tried the quick scan and full scan plus scanned the file without it detecting any virus. Yet both Kaspersky virus removal tool, Norton power eraser and previously Windows 11 security had detected it.

Avira is crap. Now i say this has a Mac/Linux guy. Not light on resources as they say. Windows it has a use case. But if your running macOS or some version of Linux all your doing is slowing things down for absolutely no reason.

Has said by many experts not being paid by Avira, the best antivirus is not being a *!%@#% on the internet (direct quote from Einstein right there). You are the best antivirus, along with maybe some tools that dont suck up so much resources (unless your windows). It straight bogged down a relatively newish mac, got rid of everything and it was like a new machine. It was constantly freezing in the background, sending stderr, but not notifying the user. And most people are not paying attention to stderr etc and logs, laahhme
