US space agency NASA has warned that a huge 1,082 ft asteroid bigger than the Eiffel Tower will break into Earth’s orbit in just over a week. The space rock is heading our way and should skim past us on December 11.
NASA has its eye on Asteroid 4660 Nereus because it’s well over 492 feet long and will come within 4.6 million miles of Earth. That puts it in the potentially hazardous category.
The T4660 Nereus will not pose a threat to our planet and will fly past earth at a distance of 2.4 million miles on 11 December, which is more than 10 times the distance between Earth and the Moon.
Like other Apollo-class asteroids, Nereus' orbit puts it frequently close to Earth. It actually orbits almost twice for every orbit of Earth, making missions to explore the asteroid easy and feasible.
Asterank, a database that monitors more than 6 lakh asteroids, estimates that Asteroid Nereus' value aroubd $5 billion, making it one of the most cost-effective asteroids to leverage for mineral resources. The asteroid is thought to contain billions worth of iron, nickel and cobalt deposits.
Asteroid 4660 Nereus has been a proposed target for a space mission multiple times, because of its egg shape, size and orbital path around the sun.
NASA scientists have already proposed missions to the Nereus asteroid. But the plans never materialised for various reasons.
According to NASA, the asteroid orbits the sun every 664 days. It will pass by Earth at a great distance and is predicted not to come close to the planet until 2 March 2031 again.
The closest approach the egg-shaped asteroid will make is predicted to be 14 February, 2060, when it will be just under 745,645 miles away.
