God Gives Freely, Man Patents and Sells for Profit | Plant Patent and the Propagating of Cuttings

The most recent comment I received on this topic was, "God gives freely, man patents for a profit". So today we're going to talk about plant patent and the propagating of cuttings of those patented plants. Hopefully we'll answer some questions like, "What does it mean when a plant is patented"? It's a controversial topic among nursery goers and backyard plant propagators every spring, and the question is, "Is it Ethical"? We'll dive into my thoughts on the subject of selling plants for a profit and whether or not it's an ethical thing to do. Be prepared though. We'll do a little deductive reasoning on this one.

I agree with you on hybrid plants, but when companies want to patent heirloom varieties, therefore making seed saving illegal, that crosses the line.

you may appreciate this Mike: I work in the municipal water field and when people complain about the cost of water and how water is free and put on earth by God for us, my boss tells them they can take a bucket to the lake and bring water home, but if they want to turn on the faucet at their house and get safe, clean water, they need to pay someone.

If people think selling plants to make a living is horrible why do they watch your channel? I’m tired of so many people think their opinion is supposed to matter to everyone else. Grrrr thanks Mike I have learned so much from you and find your enthusiasm refreshing

I get the initial comment, but when a individual works on a project for years / decades in some cases. They deserve compensation, and patents dont last forever either.

I'm only watching a video with a title that includes God and profit in the same sentence because it's you Mike, you make some excellent points, I don't think life forms should be subject to patents

Appreciate your taking on this topic Mike. I've been working for almost 30 years to educate folks on how important it is to respect the work plantsmen do. Lots of folks are completely unaware plant patents even exist.

With plant swaps and online sales being such a big thing now, its a lot easier for people to disrespect the patent laws and I remember only a rare few ever being caught. I've seen it go on at pop up plant sales when residents are trying to earn some extra income or if some treasured plant happens to be up for a swap for the right plant in trade. It's a tough thing to stop.

Thank you so much for the video on propagating hydrangeas. I followed your advice exactly and I had absolute success. Out of 28 cuttings 26 rooted. The only two that didn’t root were very soft short tips that I shouldn’t have not wasted my time with. I had tried rooting in the past unsuccessfully. Not only did I learn how to root from your video but I understood the how and why.
My property consists of mostly shade here in the Southeastern US. hydrangeas grow great here but are ridiculously expensive in our area. I can’t wait to add more color to the shaded area of my garden.
Thank you again for providing priceless knowledge too many. I wish you nothing but success with your channel and your business.

Well said. I am a religious person myself but I have always said EVERYTHING at some point came from the earth, chemicals, plastics, everything. Not to mention God gave us the knowledge to learn how to create these things and how to live off of them and that means making a profit from our labors so we can pay bills, buy food and survive.

Never thought or ran into a patent plant yet. But this is thoughtful.

If someone hadn't hybridized the Apple tree we wouldn't have Honey Crisp apples. Such a ridiculous argument

Hey Mike, great information! You answered so many questions! But my biggest question I never find answers for is, how do all these wesites and Etsy shops sell plants that are still within the 20 year Patent protection? Is there a website where you can buy the license to sell these varieties?

I'm with you 100 %, I don't hybridize anything but I spend about 10 to 12 hours a day with my babies and I love watching all the things that they do and how they grow, it's amazing. I'm always finding out new things about them. You're the best Mike. 😊😊🤗🤗😁😁
