There was a war for this damn place. "Tacitly" is putting it Very lightly.
We're still technically at war. Just in an extremely long and perpetual armistice.

Russia didn't relinquish any control over anything. it very much the controlling party there. It is not independent by any means other than perhaps some technicality.

The general sentiment in Moldova is that it is simply a Russian occupied territory designated to hold/deploy their troops for strategic advantages.

We'd call it a relic of the past but the war in Ukraine very much raised tensions about it's existence once again.

I feel very bad for the people living there as their standards of living are reportedly very low and don't really get to travel or have any forward momentum in life other than what Russia offers. It is an unfortunate place.

Is that true? I saw a video saying that the people of Transnistria literally get their salaries and pension from the Russian government. And 80% of the population votes for Putin and his party. Seems like they are definitely more aligned with Russia and not just going their own way. I don’t know if they would survive economically without some support in this case from Russia.

Just went there yesterday. I can feel the tension but the residents live normally. It felt like it stayed in the 90s though
