The Union Cabinet has approved a major expansion of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) to cover all senior citizens aged 70 years and above.

This change allows anyone in this age group to be eligible for health insurance, regardless of their income level.

After the Cabinet meeting, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made a commitment that all senior citizens above the age of 70 years will be given coverage under Ayushman Bharat PM Jan Arogya Yojana. There are many families which are already covered and have senior citizens. In such families, additional coverage, top-up coverage will be Rs 5 lakh."

The government is aware that 99% of people rely on private hospitals for treatment, yet these hospitals often refuse to accept government policies, schemes, or cards. As a result, many government initiatives, like health schemes, are poorly implemented and ineffective. Despite claims of free healthcare, there's always a hidden cost, and it's like being looted indirectly. How many private hospitals actually accept government health cards or policies? Most won’t, as seen with the Ayushman Card. If you have money, you get treated; if not, you’re left to suffer.

PS: If the government system were efficient, healthcare policies and schemes would be accessible to everyone and accepted at both private and government hospitals. Shouldn't that be the case?
