You should also note that ALL PS3's play PS1 games natively so even if you don't have an OG model, you can still play PS1 games on the PS3.

Backwards compatible with ps2(all are compatible with ps1) are Models:
CECHAxx (60gb/NTSC) & CECHBxx (20gb/NTSC) are hardware-based backwards compatible.
CECHCxx (60gb/PAL) & CECHExx (80gb/NTSC) are software-based backwards compatible.
CECHGxx and later all have no backwards compatibility.

You should also note that 3rd party controllers don't work with ps2 games, and not sell your backwards compatible models with controllers that don't provide full functionality of the system.

The chrome tray is also a foolproof way of checking if it is backwards compatible, or if the tray is black which is only on the cechb01 model

You also have to watch out for hardware and software versions. Since the hardware one tend to die way quicker compared to a software BC one. There are videos on how a possible process there will be to help save these BC PS3s from ending up in the waste or parts.

Fully backwards compatible PS3s also have a chrome finish on the part that would be gray on any latter model of the fat PS3; something that would be easy to spot right away if nothing else.

I bought a 60 GB backwards compatible launch model PS3 from DK Oldies years ago. It was pricey but in amazing condition and still works to this day. I still play Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks

It's been a very very long time but if I remember correctly, it was one of the earlier models and it was a 20×30 or 20x40 gig console I also believe that the backwards compatibility was installed a design flaw

Just look out for the 4 usb ports as the cechb01 model is backwards compatible but it doesn’t have the card reader
