I solved my swing woes by analyzing the handle as well. I found if I tried to jam the butt end into my left hip thru impact it solved my release problems which were mostly hitting pushes or hooks. I had been pulling the handle too far passed the ball laterally. There was no way for the head to catch up plus it pushed the path in to out. Now if I use my move the handle slows down, face squares, and head accelerates. Works like magic and I can now go at it as hard as I want and it goes straighter than before. I don’t think much about rotating my forearm or any such manipulations because that just causes tension for me.

Perfect, I really like this explanation of the the Hogan mystic...

You are right C. After the "free ride"all hell breaks loose. Imo, and since I can do it and it works, he goes from cupped left wrist with active pressure of left hand pushing into rt hand and unrolling wrists AWAY from Target. Remember, he said the "inside muscles" and the inside muscles of the left arm can only pressure away from Target. So, the passive transition loads the right wrist in the paddle fasion. The beauty of this is with the cup the shaft isn't stressed yet, so one can let it get down. There is no compulsion to spin out in reaction to pressure at the change of direction. That's genius there imo. Then we stress that shaft at waste high by actively decupping and going to what he called "suppination". Though not the right term. As we do that the hands are doing exactly what you showed there. The "inside" muscles are scissoring the handle pressuring the shaft. And as long as the pivot continues, bam, hit it as hard as you can and the club will not roll over. Pivot key though, and not intuitive for most. Remember, he often hit it as hard as he could with his hands!. But w/o the pivot that's a Trainwreck. But, you are right here. And imo it's the "secret". Cupped and deleveraged, free ride down with continuous pivot, leverage the shaft with "suppination". Then hit it as hard as you want. Club fit massively important here though, but that's another discussion.
Sidenote. McHatton great teacher and gets the pivot, but totally missed it here. Hogan at his best had the farthest thing from passive hands, and he told us so. But, very late do they do it. And it is a massive strike with the hands. Me, don't think it's teachable at this point in my life. But that's another discussion. Anyway, you are right. Not sure if your eqiupment will work for this though. Light driver just won_t work. Etc. Anyway.

Yes...A lot of leverage is achieved by pushing down with the right hand and pulling up with the left hand...I also leave a little bend in my left elbow and a tiny bit of space between my hands...

Do you supinate your wrist at impact while using his right index fight pressure?

Hi Christo!
I just want to mention this extra whip. The way I use it, although I think Mr. Hogan is also, it's not just a last minute blow. This will ensure control of the clubhead to drive longer on a straight line rather than towards the target's direction. Result shooting is more accurate, less spin.

I've been working for almost a year to incorporate the essence of Hogan's swing. Quite a journey. I had power push-slices and incredible snap/smother hooks. THen the swing transitioned to hitting it amazingly well of the tee but not with any other club. I tended to hit behind on all my irons even when teed up. It was clear that the old swing was competing with the "Hogan" prototype especially under pressure. THen over time it settle down and I have hit some amazing shots where I can feel the "lag" generating power and the ball LEAPS off the face with more distance and height then ever. I have hit some amazingly long tee-shots - 50 to even 100 yards longer than my previous bests.

Still, I'm a long way from feeling this is my new-normal swing and where I can handle my nerves on the golf course for score. Also still, it is a lot of fun to be trying something-old-something-new with the Hogan swing after playing 60+ years with my previous swing(s). Looking forward to getting compliments. I've already had two guys say how "Still" my head is during the swing. A new compliment.

Great photos of Mr. Hogan's helpful, even if I put my own dna stamp on you.

Good analysis, I always believed that Hogan was pulling on the grips of his clubs rather than pushing. Just before impact, he is using his right hip and elbow as a timing or measuring guide to guide the club and also to time the next move, the release.. Just as the right elbow clears inside the right hip, he supinates or rotates his left wrist while pulling upward with the left hand which slings the club head or releases it through impact.

I 100% agree with you. I believe the butt end should move upward, on plane, through the arc. I’m finding success in the motion where the butt end moves up the shaft plane before the club head impacts the ball. At the same time... the body continues to rotate through impact... and as a product of this rotation, the hands passively unhinge, and the shaft twists (I think of it as a “screwdriver effect” with the left hand for a right handed player, or as Mr. Hogan described in 5 Lessons... his supination move) adding to the squaring of the club face. I think this type of move is what Mr. Hogan did, and it’s what made his swing appear to “gather” the ball so well through impact.

Wow! I just tried this feel. It’s pretty natural and easy to get immediate feedback. Wish I knew where to get info on your lessons? I live in the SFV.

Every golfer has their own golf style and shape of left wrist changes from top of swing to impact. Followings are wrist shape of famous golfers.(Top - Impact)
Mr.Ben Hogan(cupped - slightly bowed)
Palmer(slightly bowed - flat) Nicklaus(flat - flat or slightly bowed) Trevino(strongly bowed - flat) Dustin Johnson(strongly bowed - flat or slightly bowed) McIlroy(slightly cupped - slightly cupped) Jordan Spieth(bowed - bowed) Jon Rahm(bowed - bowed) Cameron Champ(bowed - strongly bowed) Collin Morikawa(bowed - strongly bowed) Dechambeau(flat - slightly bowed)

Hi Christo what you call the push/ pull; I believe is the same swing that tennis players do with their two handed grip of their tennis handle along with their swinging their forearms. If you recall in a previous remark I said that the hands return to their exact location as they were when the hands are set up for the swing. I told local golf pro Ted Foster here in NH; who runs a 5 star golf camp for kids all summer; my full shoulder rotation/ vertical arms theory of golf and how when done properly spirals our body down to our feet. Eddie Merrins said to swing the handle of the club in the same manner as a tennis player and believe me it works. In fact after showing Ted my swing at 70 years old; he has ask me to be a volunteer coach for his kids at camp this summer. I told him I am a lousy player on the course. He said good. You help me show the kids how to swing a golf club and every Monday I will play and coach you through a round of golf free. Deal done!🙂

What also jumps out at me is the bend in the LEFT arm at just after 2 minutes which Tyler Ferrell ( golfsmart academy) calls "the left arm wipe". No-one else talks about this but many of the modern greats do it (Mcilroy, Koepka etc etc). This must play a part in the raising of the butt of the handle here I think.

Very interesting...Great work on this discovery...People who truly love the game are the one's most successful at it.  When I say "love", I mean the people who naturally just love to work at their game.  Ben Hogan did, and so do you...Keep up the excellent work.  I can't wait to talk to my brother about your discovery.

Hi Cristo. Are you saying the bowed wrist is a result of the late lag hit ? I can get a bowed wrist through impact when swinging the club through with kind of an end over end thought. The later the release the more the bowed wrist is achieved? Would you agree with this? Does this sound like im on correct path?

Check out video: Ben Hogan the Hawk. On the beach in FL. Last part he breaks down his grip and says that at all times in the back swing he is pushing down on end of the handle with the heal pad of his left hand WHILE pulling up on the handle with the last 2 fingers of that hand.

Could this be his secret? Doing so, in union with all the other things going on, insures that the club is staying outside the hands. Like the flying wedge theory in The Golf Machine. Top hand can only cock the club up and the bottom hand can only hinge. Meld them together and happy days!

Pretty common move amongst professional golfers. If you hit the correct position pre impact (p6). The butt of the club has to move in this manner to make proper contact, due to correct body rotation and unhinging of the wrists

Really enjoy these videos. Hogan, Snead and Nelson WOW. Think about the equipment and the ball. No technology, just pure talent and ball striking techniques. I’ve used the Hogan swing with fine results.
